JDM FSZE Build

:
1993 Mazda 626 ChumpCar
We have acquired a real JDM FSZE engine and are tearing it down and going through it before dropping it in our race car. Will post pics as we go. Enjoy

So we got most of the engine put back together today. New rod bearing and bolts. Old bearings didn't look to bad but we did this for peace of mind.

Then we put the pump and AWR oil pan on. The pump we disassembled and ran through the parts washer and then rebuilt.

Done with the bottom we flipped the shortblock over and started on the topside. New headgasket after cleaning all the surfaces. Note the pistons ;) The head is also marked 10.1 ;)

We pulled the dowls out of the head and put them into the block before lining the head up. They can be smashed all the way into the head and you don't even know they are there. This prevents correct alignment if the dowls don't get aligned correctly. After torquing the head down in 3 different steps it was on to the cams and cam gears. One interesting thing on this JDM motor was that BOTH cams are FSH9 intake cams just orientated differently. We did a double take on this when we first took it apart.

Crank timing pulley, water pulley, tensioners installed. Set up the timing which was a little confusing at first with the different markings on the gears but once we figured it out we got it set first try. Then plastics. Then accessories. We also got the water lines runs and the tstat housing. We didn't have the rear coolant passage gasket so we decided to stop there till the next day. Won't take much more and we'll be ready to drop in the car. Everything going smoothly so far.

We are unsure which intake manifold we are going to run. If we decide to run the jdm manifold with the VICS system we control it with our microsquirt or just delete the VICS. The injectors and rails are also different on the 2 manifolds. Have to do some more research on this.

Interesting, my Fs-ze has 19.1 on the head near the exhaust port where yours has 10.1, Different casting run maybe?

Should be 10.1 or 9.1. 10.1 on the ZE stuff and 9.1 on the DE stuff. Both the block and head on ours has 10.1 19.1 might indicate the revised 9.1 head, not sure.

Does the exhaust cam say EX on it? Did you do the main bearings and thrust washers when you were in there for the rod bearings?

I am interested in the microsquirt, been looking into EMSs lately. How difficult is it to set up?

The ZE fuel rail has to be used with the ZE mani, or an older 626 rail will work if it has 2 mounting brackets instead of 4, just have to modify the spacers a bit. The stock DE fuel lines will fit, but the ZE rail doesn't have a pulsation dampener. You can use one from a NB Miata, it mounts on the fuel line instead of the rail.

No, the cam says IN on it. We didn't do the mains or thrust washers based on the condition of everything else which was really good. In road racing the rod bearings will go before anything. We will run these a couple of races and then pull and check them.

We have complete setups of each mani with rails, injectors, dampners, etc... , just unsure which one will benefit this engine the most. We also want to try and keep it from being too complicated and failing. (less moving parts is better on a race car)

The microsquirt was already in the car when we acquired it. The car did 3 races on this system previously. We have the ZE wiring harness and ECU if it all goes to hell but we do not plan on using them.

If you are using the 626 with OBD 1 you could probably use the ZE ecu and harness. The ZE mani should flow better on the top end, but I do not know about low end.

The Microsquirt controls the coil packs and injectors? I assume it just needs a cam/crank signal, MAP and O2 input? Have you tried to adjust the tune? I assume it comes with a tuning software?

The car/engine won't spend much time at all at low RPM.

We haven't had an engine in the car since we acquired it.

Test fit the ignition system and the header. Waiting on gasket. Should have the motor in the car this upcoming weekend. Believe we are going to go with the ZE intake that came on this engine. Not sure if we are going to delete the VICS yet or not though. Any suggestions?

I happen to have a full FSZE intake manifold with fuel rail and egr with tube I am not using so remove the VICS and if it sucks then you can buy my unmodified setup................

Lol. We are gonna try just locking the vics in the open position and go from there. We think it will be much easier to tune this way and we dont have to worry about trying to make it work. Less things that can go wrong. Egr is being deleted. We have a tube and egr if anyone needs one.
