Ok ,so i just bought an msp for 1k, im pretty sure i know the answer, but i figured id consult you guys first. He said it has a brand new ebay turbo, but it went to 15psi, and started smoking. I put the scanner up to it, CEL light said PO303, so i checked the 3rd spark plug. Covered in oil. I looked down into the plug hole and i could see oil. Checked oil, level was fine and looked good, no creaminess. Start it, runs rough, when i put about 2 1/2k to 3k revs on, you can hear a knocking which sounds like the 3rd cylinder. Smokes when running. Looked under car and it seems to be coated in oil. I can see what looks like fresh oil by the head and top of exhaust shield. Motor toast right?

Anything i can do to bring it back? Or used engine/rebuild? Yea he got burnt on the deal, had it for 2 months, paid 2700, then sold it to me.

Well i have a yellow p5 that i use for work, and this is going to be my play car, so just rebuild the current engine? I know going forged is the IDEAL thing to do, but cant afford the money for forged internals at this moment. Can i just buy a rebuild kit and start stock?

The car itself is in excellent shape, newer spicy orange paint job, and no rust that i can see, inside engine bay and or underbody/ frame

Everywhere?

I monitor CL all the time for MSPs. I just missed out on one for $1,200. It's not uncommon at all.

You CAN start stock.. but there's no telling where that'll lead. could be a waste. just something to consider.

While you have the P5 as a daily that does leave the option to accumulate the parts to build the motor to your satisfaction, It will take time but you know it'll be spot on. I have taken 3 years so far and only need to get the ARP head and main studs plus machining.

Yea i think this will be a fun build. Mostly bc its unique especially in TN, and a rare car at that.

Nothing wrong with swapping in a used engine, find one with the lowest mileage and swap it in. JDM engine importers sell FS engines for around $700 with relatively low miles. Just be sure you aren't getting a high compression ZE.

Well I found a 2002 protege that has 100k on it in my area for $300 bucks....unfortunately its an automatic, which means more work for me.
