2015 Mazda CX-5 GT FWD
Hey All!

I just picked up a 2015 CX-5 GT in GRAY! Got a really good deal and it was within my price range so I'm really stoked and can't wait to do a few things to it.

I've looked around on this site a bit and love all of the information that's here.

I don't plan on doing too much to it other than getting some racks/cargo box/tint/ and maybe some new wheels.

Yew!!!

Welcome to the club! I think pics should be mandatory? ;)

Love it so far. I'm coming from a 2009 Speed3 so it's a much smoother ride which is what I was looking for.

A couple people here say it rides rough. Are you kidding me? They must not have ever driven a car that's been lowered or is truly just stiff.

Congrats!
I think the first things I did were tint and tires.

Funny I'm actually getting new tires tomorrow and tint on Saturday....probably going to hold off on getting new wheels for a while....getting a roof rack system set up is my main priority because us San Diegans love to surf/camp/blah blah blah

Haven't had time to get decent pics yet....but I plan on taking some every step of the way and soon.

Yea when I was test driving them and reading reviews the sales people kept saying there's quite a lot of cabin noise and the handling is stiff....I wasn't quite sure what he was talking about or who would even say that, haha...smoothest ride I've had ever.

For a cuv it does. This coming from a former z06 owner with no mrc option. It really is a stiff ride, and I find myself cringing on certain driveway to road interfaces. Lots of "crash" when you hit any sudden dip like that.

Cabin noise is high for cuv too, but I have a 2015 which has less insulation than a z06.

What are you comparing it to? You said you didn't test drive any. The suspension in the Cherokee is very much like the Mazda. The CR-V was cushier. I don't like cushy. Lol

I used to work for ford. Nothing on our lot including a mustang gt felt as "crashy". Even my z06 was more subtle. This thing is very ham fisted over any kind of drops like you encounter joining a road from a drove. It's like an atomic pogo stick when it sees any kind of depression in the pavement. Igor smash! I imagine the tire saying as it rockets to the bottom of the dip to slam down and jar the whole ride. Now, hitting a bump and rebound control, it feels fine to me. I'm not a suspension engineer, but I'd bet the spring rates are etoopid high and very aggressive shocks and struts are used.

Indeed. Couldnt agree more.

I went to my first CX5 4 years ago from what you guys in the US would probably know as the Chevy SS - which was made here in Aus by GM's Australian division GMHolden and we call it a Commodore SS. Its brother in V6 form called the Commodore SV6. Had a few of them in recent years too. Sports suspension, rear wheel drive, IRS, and 20" low profile rubber.

It was nice to find a SUV that drives and handles really nicely. Not as sharp and pointy as the SS of course, but you wouldnt expect that. But neither does it shake the bones on a rough surface like the SS or the SV6 did.

I think the CX5 has got a really good handling, ride and performance compromise. Only my subjective opinion, of course!

Its funny how people perceive "ride" comfort.

My main passion is fishing and boating. Ive been in and driven dozens of different trailer boats, and never cease to be amazed - brand "A" is claimed by one individual to have a rough ride and some even call it a bone crusher.... ive then driven it and found it to be one of the best riding hulls around - driven sensibly and to the conditions.

Brand B that quite a few of my mates have, reputed to have a gread ride - frankly, you need to wear a kidney belt in any sorts of seas to keep your internal organs, well, inside your body!

One of my mates who owns a 21 ft Brand B came for a ride offshore in my 18 ft Brand A and remarked at how smoothly it rode and how well it handled some quite bumpy seas. He may not have noticed that i was travelling about 5 knots slower than he would have been in his boat.....

So, I put most of these claims down to the driver, and in some cases an inability, or perhaps a subconscious unwillingness, to adjust their driving style to the vehicle/boat in the first instance, and then to the road/sea conditions.

I would bet that I could blindfold anyone, take them for a ride in my CX5 and have them complain about the rough ride. If I drove it like i was still driving my SS or SV6!

And then take them out again, tell them its a different car, drive the CX5 like it shoild be driven, and have them say what a confortable ride it has.

Took the wife's 2012 Outback for ice cream Sunday. It rode like a marshmallow. I was really stunned by how much 'cushier' it was than my CX-5 (after I wrote how much improved the ride was with the 18" X-ice's, and suspension break-in).

Please note that I **HATE*** the Outback's ride, but 95% of drivers would like it.

People confuse "harsh" with "handles well".

A perfect example is the BMW M3. My friend had one (2003 model, I rode in it in 2004). It GLIDED over pot-holes under WOT. Barely bobbled the car. My 1995 Trans AM would have been SLAMMING through those pot-holes...the M3's suspension rapidly and gracefully articulated to accommodate the road irregularities on that little backwater cross-over road in S. TX. My Trans Am? Not so much. People that think harsh=handles well would hands-down LOVE my Trans Am's crash-smash approach to pot-holes and seams in the pavement. People who actually knew what a good handling car was, would revel in the precision and grace of the M3.

I think people who are hung up on this CX5 being "performance oriented" are doing much the same thing. Stiffer ain't always better. Considering the rock and roll wallowing the Miata does, I'm shocked to see the Mazda crowd singing this tune.

*Another great example is the ZR1 vs. Z06. ZR1 handles WAY better, Z06 feels WAY "crisper" and more rigid and stiff.

**2 UPDATES**

March 18th- So 1 week in to having my 2015 GT and am having transmission issues. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow am and hoping the warranty covers it. After doing some research and taking it to my local shop (they ruled out wheel bearing issues) it looks like it's the transmission/transaxle. TSB No. 0500414 is what I found and it's exactly what I'm hearing (although I have a 2015 and it only shows '12-'14 having the problem)

March 20th- Took my 2015 GT to the dealer this morning to get the transmission checked....moral of the story is it needs a new transmission...thankfully covered by the warranty! Should be good as new in a week or 2 and in the meantime they gave me a 2016.5 GT to drive around...Sport mode is kind of cool on it!
All in all, thank goodness for the warranty!!

Here's the link to the TSB that I found for the symptoms that made me concerned.... http://bit.ly/2nfdZp9
