Engine ticking

2003 Mazda Protege 5
I have an '03 Protege 5 with close to 170k miles on it. Just the other day i was leaving work and decided to floor it out of the parking lot without letting her warm up. There's a KandM intake on her which sounds pretty good so thats what im always used to hearing. However, after flooring it i starting hearing a continuous ticking noise coming from the engine area. It seemed to get louder and more intense the higher the revs (mostly in 2nd). Now i just notice it when i lightly step on the gas or just in the lower revs in general. All I've done so far is add more oil as she was getting pretty low. Any ideas?

Low on oil, high mileage and stressing the engine when cold, my guess is you damaged the rod/main bearings. At best it's lifter noise or an exhaust leak but I would not bet on it. I would check the oil for shavings and start shopping for an FSZE, they can be had for ~$6-700.
