99 PROTEGE
Check engine light came on for the MAF. Ordered a new, admittedly low-quality part for it. When installed, suddenly the car wants to die when at a stop and there was a weird burning smell. Also broke the tab of the connector that goes to the air filter box. It seems to stay in place. I put the old MAF back on, while it runs better with the new part, died on me again, but with far more warning. Smell didn't come back. How can I make it stop trying to kill over all the sudden?

Could the new part have damaged something? Does this sound like improper installation or something loose? Could it be the broken tab?

If anyone needs it to assess the situation, I can post pictures. Thanks!

How was your car running when the check engine light originally came on?
Do you have an oiled air filter?
