Torque converter questions

Does the CX-5's transmission refuse to lock the tq converter until it reaches temp? It was acting almost like a CVT out in the sub-freezing weather until right about the time the blue coolant light went off, and the tq converter began locking. it simply had elasticity within gear, so to speak, and if you let off the throttle, it immediately dropped to 750rpm even doing 50mph. If you again applied throttle, it would bounce back up, no jerk, and you'd accelerate, and as you did so, rpms would drop a few hundred as the tq converter hydraulically locked due to speed/load differentials and how they work with fluid filled tq converters.

So...does it fail to lock? If it were a problem, a non-locking tq converter would have thrown a TON of SES lights at me, I believe.

I don't know about the CX-5 but my other vehicles wouldn't lock the tc up till things warmed up a bit. I'm guessing that the CX-5 is the same way.

Mike, I'm dealing with sub freezing temps daily up here. What you describe sounds normal, for the most part. The blue temp light has to do with water temp, not trans fluid temp but they are close to being "normal" when the lamp goes off.

I udnerstand the bit about the blue light and agree.

That is what I have been thinking, anyways. Don't want to "shock" the clutches by shifting HARD with fluid that is definitely outside of its optimal consistency. Most vehicles actually unlock the converter for every shift. I dunno, but I'd hope the CX-5 does the same?

Not really seeing anything in FSM other than the timing changes that occur after engine is over 140 degrees.

Here are some graphs from FSM that might be of interest. I assume this is mainly for '13-'15 models
