I'm considering buying an 03 Protege5. It would be a big plus if my son's bass (not the fish) fit inside it. I think if we put the rear seats down and lean the front passenger seat forward, there's a chance, but that's from eyeballing pictures online. Laying on its side, the instrument is about 75" long x 27" tall x 20" thick. The seller is about 3 hours away. It would very disappointing to drive there and discover that the hatch won't close with the bass inside.
