Recommendation for winter wheel size

I ran 245/65-17 Bllizzaks last winter on Kia wheels, and the car drove great. The Kia wheels, which I already had, are the same lug circle, lug size, number of lugs, center bore diameter, and offset, as well as a very close weight rating.

The old myth of narrower tires having better grip in snow has been debunked. There's nothing wrong with slightly narrower tires, but nothing great about them, either (except maybe the price).

Got these boots put on, Factory M008 "19, Nokian R2 255/55/R19s. Looks decent, TPMS won't work till I get the summers back on however.

The manual says the recommend taking it to Mazda to adjust the sensor id so it recognizes the new tires. You can also do it by yourself which involves turning the car on and off, waiting 15mins, then driving above 16km/h or something for 10mins. I tried that and it didn't work. A button is much easier.

I can confirm that this is correct. My CX-5 has the button, so when I noticed it was missing in the CX-9 I pulled out the manual to check, and it’s been deleted on the ‘18’s. I haven’t tried the reset procedure yet, but it’d suck if it didn’t work as advertised.

Did Mazda change the type of TPMS? My '16 has an indirect system that monitors the rotational speed of each wheel using the ABS rotation sensors. A low tire will have a small O.D. and therefore roll faster than the others. It sounds like the '18 has a direct pressure sensing system with a wireless link to the main unit in the car.

I cannot say for sure, but the system still does not tell me the tire pressures, and I think you should be able to retrieve that information with the "direct" type system. Usually, those systems are able to display each tire pressure individually. The pressure sensors in the '18 do send data via radio signal to the receiver unit in the car, but it "seems to" operate the same as the previous systems did (with exception of the missing reset button). Once a low-pressure instance is determined, an idiot light tells you something is wrong and you need to check all tires to determine the issue.

My '13 Kia and the '17 Toyota have the pressure sensors in the wheels but do not display actual pressure.

You are correct, there are now individual TPMS sensors in each wheel despite the missing individual tire pressure indicators. The notification is still just the idiot light on the dash.

Hey ya'll,

This thread was so helpful in trying to find snow tires for my 2017 CX-9! Thank you! I've never bought rims or snow tires for my cars so this was a first.

Tires: Yokohama iceGUARD iG51v P255/55R-19 from SimpleTire ($651.88)
Rims: 19X9.5 VERDE PARALLAX BLK MACH from Tire Rack ($596)
Installed at Sullivan Tire ($104) - Unfortunately, I didn't realize they never gave me back my factory lugs and wheel locks! :( So I'm trying to find the proper replacement set and lock (would love recommendations!)

I also dropped down to 19" for my winter tire/wheel combo. I got ASA GT13 wheels wrapped in 255/55-19 Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2s, and I can't say enough good things about them. Having both AWD and winter tires allowed me to just plow through the 5" or 6" we got over the past week without any issues at all. Turning and braking were both fantastic, as was getting going from a stop. I'm sure some drivers watched me "blow by" them on the snow-covered highways doing all of 65mph and figured I thought I was invincible because of the AWD, but AWD isn't even half the story; it's mostly the winter tires that allowed me to drive like a jerk :D (not really)....

FWIW - I ended up dropping down to 19" wheels/tires so that I'd have bigger sidewalls to help "cushion" blows from potholes. For the most part I pay attention and am able to avoid them. But I don't miss all of them, and when I do hit one I'm happy to have the increased sidewall to protect the wheels.

*bump*

Its past time for a set of winter tires on the wifes 16 GT. Our stock Falkens lasted 36k (probably should have called it quits at 30k, theyre past done now).

I want to do a set of winter take offs. Im fairly set on 18 aftermarket wheels, but Id consider paying a little more for OEM 18 Mazda wheels someone is getting rid of. I cant seem to find many for sale, though. Probably a dumb Q, but what do we know about stock CX-5 wheels? Would those fit? I bet it would be a lot easier to find those for sale...

Stock CX-5 wheels are either 17x7 (couldn't find offset) or 19x7 +45. Should be slightly cheaper to buy tires for those sizes, and I'm pretty sure you can even go down to 17" on the CX-9. The issue would probably come from the offset and backspacing. I would suggest posting in the CX-5 Wheels, Tires, and Suspension subforum. For reference, the OEM 20x8.5 wheels have a +45 offset.

Good thoughts, thanks for the reply. Tire rack says you can downsize to 17. I found the info below for a 2018 CX-5 on www.wheel-size.com after I posted the Q. Mostly curious if the 7 rim width on the 17s would cause a problem.
