updated engine oil drain plug ?

I think the new bolt type would be better no ? if it ever gets rounded and stripped, you can at least get a wrench around it and loosen it.

the old type Hex socket would be harder to remove if it ever gets stripped..... the round flange would be almost impossible to grip with a plumber's wrench.

Wow; $15 for a drain plug. But shipping is free! If you're only applying the recommended 25-30# of torque, I can't imagine how you would strip the original?
 
If that's the case you can just get a (whatever size) generic hex bolt from home Depot or something for like $1-2.
 
For that price they should give you at least a free oil filter with it....

I wouldn't call that Amazon drain plug an "updated" drain plug but simply a compatible replacement.
 
I much prefer the 8mm allen drain plug. Mazda updated the old bolt type to the new internal allen type. ed
