Broken Timing Chain

I have an '08 Touring 2.3 turbo with 92k and my timing chain snapped on me. I've called all sorts of dealerships and mechanics and almost every single one has told me that there is probably more internal engine damage than is worth fixing. Their suggestion is to replace the engine. Best quote I've gotten so far has been about $4500. I'm wanting to know if anyone else has had this happen to them and what they have done to resolve it. I'm not interested in buying a new engine but I also don't want to waste a substantial amount of money tearing the engine down only to find that I need to replace it.
