CX-5 broken into

:
2016 CX-5 GT | FWD | Soul Red | Tech Package
Someone smashed the passenger window of my CX-5 couple of days back when it was parked outside daughter's day care. There was absolutely nothing inside the car and in the glove box. So nothing was lost. Looks like they rummaged through the glove box.

Since there was no bags or valuables in the car in plain sight, I believe they broke into it only in hopes of finding something in the glove box. Maybe they knew that the CX-5s don't have a lock on the glove box. I always kept the glove box locked in my previous cars and think Mazda's omission to include a lock might have played a part in this.

Anyway, the glass fell on the leather seats and tore it. The door trim had some scratches and some glass pieces went inside the ac vents. The dash has to be taken out to clean that mess. Overall the quote is $2300 and insurance is taking care of it. I'm glad the paint wasn't damaged because color matching the Soul Red would've been difficult.

Very sorry to hear that! I was surprised about the leather seat been torn and dash needs to be removed to clean up the mess? The side window is a safety glass. When it breaks it becomes small round pieces and they're not supposed to produce any sharp edges.

Our 2000 BMW 528i and 1998 Honda CR-V both got broken in while parked on the driveway overnight. Like your situation nothing major got stolen. I didn't go through the insurance in fear of rate increase. And I bought driver-side window for 528i and rear-door quarter-window for CR-V and replaced them by myself. The most difficult part was cleaning up glass debris as they're everywhere! The leather seat on 528i didn't get torn as those debris of safety glass weren't too big nor too sharp even though many of them laying on the seat! The cost of these OEM window glasses were cheap enough not even meeting my insurance deductible. Of course when windshield or rear window got smashed, the only option for me is to go through those auto glass stores.

Yeah I do wish there's a lock on glove compartment for our CX-5 like our 528i and CR-V. But apparently that didn't stop the break-in although it was dark in my case and those thieves couldn't tell!

The entire glass shattered and the pieces were strewn everywhere. Several of them went inside the vents and I could hear them rattle when driving. Looks like the seat was damaged by the pressure of falling glass window, maybe the sharp edge of it.

The glass pieces all were very sharp. Not round at all. You can see some in the pic below.

Even if Mazda put a lock on the glove box, it would not have stopped them. It would have just been more damage if there was a lock. A locked door did not stop them.

Car burglars know/care little about cars and things like glove box locks. Merely looking for opportunity to get lucky and score something. Both me and my SO have had our vehicles broken into. A daycare is a target because many of the vehicles were probably driven by women, who tend to be more likely to keep things like purses and wallets in their car while they're inside (according to police taking our reports). Gym parking lots are also a prime target for the same reason.

Considering its broad daylight and in front/near a building I'm sure this was some type of meth-head or something. Common sense would say there's very little value in the contents of a glove box. If you truly want to steal something of value it in broad daylight like that it better be because there's a purse or a phone in plain sight. Hopefully this is an isolated incident and the person is caught because it seems they are really dumb. I would ask the daycare about theft on their lots and maybe try to park closer to building windows.

Either the leather is stronger or the debris of the safety glass were not as sharp, the leather driver seat in our broken-in BMW 528i wasn't get any damages like yours even though there were a lot more glass debris on the driver seat than your picture shown. I hope your insurance will replace the leather seat cover for you!

As a side note, I can tell the leather in our CX-5 feels differently than the leather from our BMW 528i or VW Passat. It feels more like leatherette or a very thin leather with a top layer of some synthetic material.

where do you all keep your registration, if the glove box doesn't lock?

Sorry to hear about your losses. Really piss off with those burglars who do these sort of willful damage to other people's properties.

I am a bit surprised to see the Mazda broken glass has sharp edges. I have always thought the laminated safety glass should not shatter into pieces with sharp edges. Mmmmm. What would happen in an accident ...

I believe only the windshield is laminated. As with most vehicles, the side windows are tempered glass. The pieces are not razor sharp as untempered glass would be, but the glass is fairly thin (weight savings). I wonder if the burglar actually sat in the seat and ground some of the glass into it with his ass. I had a rear seat window broken once and it didn't damage any of the interior, just made a mess.

In automobiles only front windshield uses laminated safety glass but all other windows use tempered safety glass. Tempered glass would shatter into many uniform and small pieces which have minimum sharp edges. Yeah, I was surprised to see the "leather" got damaged like the picture shown by the shattered glass pieces as well, as from my experience of broken-in from our BMW 528i and Honda CR-V, those uniform and small glass pieces from tempered glass shouldn't be sharp enough and heavy enough to make that kind of damage.

Then the leather should have more scratches with so many glass pieces on it, and the guy's ass should suffer similar "damage" like the leather seat! :)

Yeah true. Odd/unlucky I guess

If this picture is representative of the Mazda glass upon impact, I don't think the people on that seat will fare too well in a side impact situation.

Funny thing is the CX5 has got 5 stars in almost every continent's crash testing. US, Eupore, AU/NZ and Japan. I did my research before buying the CX5. I would have thought with the broken glass and sharp edges there is no way it can get 5 stars crash rating.

Anyone has any thought?

Only the windshield is laminated. The door glasses are tempered and I was very surprised to see how sharp several of those pieces were. You can see those in the pics I posted. Imagine those shattering on to your face in the event of an accident!

They didn't sit on the seat for sure because they would have to open the door to do that and it would've sounded the alarm. Moreover there'll be more damage on the seats if that was the case.

I got the car back today after repairs. The new door panels and the glasses look great but I'm not happy with the fitting of the new seat cover. It looks a bit wrinkled and loose, unlike the right stretched factory look. I was told this is to be expected and it should "settle" over time, I'm a month or so. Is there any truth to this? Don't want to give the body shop a 5 star rating if this is BS.

Well, for 2016 CX-5, NHTSA frontal crash rating on passenger side got downgraded from the best 5 stars of previous MY to very poor 3 stars! The results is the overall NHTSA frontal crash rating is downgraded to 4 stars from 5. Of course only Mazda knows what they'd done to cause the downgrade, but it's definitely not the side window.

The temperd glass is relatively safe as it breaks into many uniform pieces which are very small and light-weighted. The edges of each piece are not very sharp either. I personally saw these broken pieces and I wouldn't be too much concerned with these tempered glass used on the windows.

Rarely any work can be done as good as from factory and that's unfortunate! Did you use a Mazda dealer or a body shop? Is the leather seat cover the OEM or aftermarket? Yeah I saw some of the very sharp glass pieces and how the leather got damaged by the sharp glass piece in your picture. I hate to say Mazda uses inferior tempered glass (like windshield?) but none of the broken glass pieces were like that from our BMW 528i and Honda CR-V which got broken-in.

Given the evidence albeit it is only one incident, I now have some doubt on how well the cx5 will protect the passenger in the event of a side impact. Mmmmm ...

As for the leather seat cover, only a shop that specialises in leather seat restoration can do a good job. Normal body shop just does not have the skills. Let's hope that the cover will sort itself out after a while.
