Im running aftermarket wheels. 16" 195/50 on the front and 17" 215/45 on the back. Front doesnt rub, the back did rub, but I elimtated that by cutting the inner lip off the quarter no rub
this is how close my rear comes to my rear quarter panel when I have fully loaded the backend of my P5

I bought my 2002 with the OEM twist wheels (16x6 +50). When it was time for new tires I installed them on some 2005 Mazda Tribute wheels (16x7 +45). Shortly after I realized that UHP A/S were crap in the NE winter so I bought some 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse steel wheels for winter duty (14x5.5 +38). Upon needing some new summer tires, I wanted to change the wheels too so I bought some 2006 MX-5 base wheels (16x6.5 +55).

Different number of lug nuts. You changed more than just the wheels.

Gotta love that 5x4.5 bolt pattern. Probably the most common one out there.

That's the sedan or the wagon?

Were the wheels on a U.S. Protege sedan of that era 4 lug nuts too?

The wagon (P5) was only offered in a 5-lug pattern. Some sedans in the US did have a 4-lug pattern:
