I'm new to the forum and in the process of buying a 2017 cx5 gt awd. Is this problem still on going with the new cx5's or was this a problem just with 2014 models and older? The believe the 2016 and 2017 cx5s have an electronic parking brake. Maybe Mazda solved the problem with the rear brakes by making it electronic instead of a manual brake? Any thoughts?

The problem started occurring with the introduction of the electronic parking brake in 2016, and continued to the 2016.5 model. No idea if it is fixed yet on the 2017.

My 2016 CX-5 still has brake issues... all started around 5~6K.

There is a TSB R052/16C which indicates Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) not fully releasing causing brake squeals, noise, dragging, or even vehicles rolling to one side or another. Mass production change was done to replace ball and ramp which improves accuracy of screw threads that will enable complete brake release.

I'm currently working this out with North America Mazda because my dealer is saying my VIN in not part of the TSB, which I disagree with since my VIN is listed on page 2 of the TSB.

BTW - after squeal started my combined MPG never went over 22 and now my rear pads are down to 4mm while my front are still almost new.

I had my rear pads (and rotors) replaced on my 2014.5 GT 2 months ago with 60,000 kms (37,200 miles). They were squeaking when I was backing up or driving slowly. Was told it was common for the rears to go before the fronts. I asked to see the old pads as they were replacing them and they were indeed down to almost nothing. Personally, I thought they should have lasted longer.

I'll be checking mine again in about a month when the Blizzaks go on... they were still good when I checked with my caliper in the spring.
