It may a bit in portrait stance, but I'm thinking not in landscape stance. It's flexible regarding placement where you let it actually 'grab' the phone (high or low). I'll try it and let you know.
I can't comment specifically for the CX-5 but I'm using a Proclip mount in my MX-5. Here is a link to their two options for the CX-5. In addition you will need to buy the holder for your specific phone that will mount to the base. A bit pricey but they are very nice.

I use this https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned) and place it on the flat spot right on top between the gauge cluster and the radio. Easily accessible by hand and easily removed.
Should be able to. But don't use suction cup holding on to the rubberized dash surface. It'll cause permanent round mark according to people who had tried.... Does the suction cup hold onto the chrome top above the vent?
