225/55R19 Tire Comparison Table for CX-5 GT - Many to Choose From

OK, so I finally got my new tires installed and took a long road trip. Here is what I found.

Tires: Yokohama YK740 GTX, 225/55 R19 99V SL
Price: $167 each minus a $70 rebate on 4
Where purchased: Only sold at Discount Tire and usually have to be ordered - took 2-1/2 weeks to get mine even though website says 2 days.
UTQG rating: 740AA
Warranty: 60,000 miles
Initial tread depth: 12/32"
Weight: 29.1 lb
Goal in replacing OEM Toyo's: get a V-rated tire in the OEM size that had the same or better summer handling but much better tread life. I have winter tires/rims, so snow performance was not a consideration.

Short summary: these tires rock and I love 'em!

Longer summary: I finally got the tires installed at 4:30 PM on Monday, October 10th. On Tuesday morning the 11th, I took off on a long road trip to NY and back (taking the long way back through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). In total, 3,255 miles. I got back last night. At first I thought the tires were hard and rode rough and were noisy. But as the miles wore on and I really thought about it, they were maybe a touch stiffer than the OEMs (at 29.1 pounds, I think the sidewalls have a lot of extra material for stiffness). As far as the road noise, it really was just "different" than the OEMs, not any better nor any worse. After a while I didn't even notice it anymore. When it comes to handling, the tires equal or even exceed the OEM Toyo's. The handling, IMO, is quite superb. If there is a drawback, I think my CX-5 accelerates from a standing start a bit slower due to the tire weight. But that is to be expected and it really is something that only one who really pushes their vehicle and knows it limits would feel in the seat of their pants. Looks wise, the tires are attractive. The only other issue I had is the kids they had working at Discount Tire. No matter the promises of "care" by the managers inside the store, the kids doing the work, while technically correct in that the old tires came off and the new ones were put on, could "care less" about your vehicle and wheels. No permanent damage was done, but I sure had to clean a lot of unnecessary slop off the wheels when I got home!

Bottom line: happy!

Oh, and yrwei52, they smell great! (boom06)

Although you're in Saudi Arabia but in the current era I can't imagine there's no other tires available for the size of 225/55R19. Have you tried any tire stores or online tire sellers in your country? Or contact Contenital or General tire importers to find out if they carry the size you want.

Using 235/55R19 tires should have no ill effects but the speedometer and odometer would be off a bit.

You also should remember Mazda CX-5 is designed to have good handling with firm suspension. Even if you switch to a little softer tires such as General AltiMAX RT43 or Continental TrueContact, or use 17" wheels and tires, you may still feel the ride is too firm! It's just the natural of the beast for good handling cars.

Your gas station guy is right, the OEM narrow "pizza-cutter" 19" tires are too new size wise and the demand is too low. And that's why nobody is willing to import into your country. But wait a year or two, and you should keep calling those tire companies, this 225/55R19 tire should be eventually available in more labels to choose.

17s have a bit thicker body to take in shocks as the rim is smaller but the tire is the same outside diameter. The P6 is not as stiff as the stock Toyo but the sidewall is thinner and more likely to be damage if your roads are bad.

you are talking right , every time i told myself that's why harsh? its for good handling but its only 184 hp its not racing car ! :)

i will wait for 1 year and see what happened thank you for help.

that's what i'm talking about if it thicker you will not feel the bad or broken roads or small holes .. by the way some of our roads is broken and have alot of work .

when i driven on asphalt really feel smoothly , but on the bad roads and "cat eyes" (road marks) it is horrible.

thanks

I don't believe General RT43 tyres are available in Australia where instead the General Grabber GT tyres are advertised occasionally for the CX-5 225/55/R19.

Has anyone tried General Tyres in Aus? The General Tyres in the CX-5 specs seem to rate average following EU Tire Labels. ie. E for rolling resistance. C for wet braking and 71-72dB for noise.

In comparison the OEM Toyo Proxes R36 rate C, C and 69dB which ironically is a fairly quiet tyre.

General AltiMAX RT43 225/55R19 99H is a Grand Touring All-Season tire developed for passenger cars with comfortable ride year-round. Its the flagship tire of their AltiMAX family.

These 2 tires are definitely different in design for different purposes. General Grabber GT is not available in the US and General AltiMAX RT43 is not available in Australia.

In US, General Tire now offers up to a $70 prepaid VISA card when you purchase a set between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31. For AltiMAX RT43 its $50. :)

Thanks for the info but despite the good treadwear ratings on them, it does not rate highly in rolling resistance (fuel efficiency) and noise.

Just discovered, for Australian drivers; a good starting point in what is available for comparison is here:
https://www.tyrecompare.com.au/size/19-inch/225-55-r19?postcode=5000

OE tires for gen-2 CX-5 GT is Toyo A36 225/55R19 99V and the price is a lot cheaper than OE tires on gen-1 CX-5 GT ⋯

yrwei52, you should update your Tire Comparison Table a bit. The OEM A23's are now $130.42 at Tire Rack. They also have the A36 for $130.36. IMO, if someone is looking to simply replace with OEM, these prices are hard to beat. I know we all know that they are not the best tire for our vehicle, but there are many folks out there who will simply want to use OEM, especially when they are cheaper than the alternatives.
Ill do it just give me some time.

Here is the updated comparison table with newly available tires and the latest pricing for 225/55R19 tires used on our CX-5 GT. Discount Tire special Yokohama YK580 is no longer available hence its not on the list.

Consumer reports has different ratings than TR in different categories. What is the most suitable category for a more comfortable and safer tire?

I'm not sure how do tire ratings get constructed by Consumer Reports. I only check their used-car reliability ratings as that are based on thousands of subscribers' experience. Car reviews by their editors are not that good IMHO. Tire ratings from Tire Rack are also based on many consumers' opinion which I feel more comfortable to believe. Tire Rack also offers their own opinions with their own tire test too. As you can see, Tire Tack ratings have "Comfort Performance" which includes "Ride Quality" and "Noise". For safety consideration of these tires other than better performance on wet、dry、winter/snow conditions, I definitely choose a tire with higher maximum inflation pressure rating、A-rated UTQG rating on traction and temperature、and a name brand.

Thanks, I agree with it and have been trying to do the same.

- No UTQG BA or BB for me.
- Similar or better load and speed rating than OEMs
- Wet, dry, ride quality and noise numbers from TR rating as you mentioned

I'll also start looking at max inflation ratings now.

Also had a question about different categories, what do they signify and which one suits CX5 in general:
- all season (general)
- all seasons touring
- all seasons grand touring
- all seasons CUV/SUV.
