Bought it new in 2004 with 500 miles on the odometer from Diamond Mazda in Baton Rouge, LA. All work other than a few oil changes by Mazda dealerships has been performed by me. I enjoyed building this car for track days and it was my daily driver up until June 2015. Its loud and stiff by design but tons of fun. Ive since purchased a new daily driver and have a RX7 for track days. Unfortunately I dont have the room to keep this car as well. Registration will renew in March so the car will be freshly inspected.

Recently performed maintenance:

  • Timing belt w/ bearings/idlers/spring
  • Water pump

  • Camshaft seals
  • Exhaust manifold original one cracked so I replaced with a repaired OEM one
    • All gaskets for manifold/turbo replaced
    • Copper coated nuts on all turbo connections
    • Turbo oil drain gasket & o-ring
  • Brake master cylinder
  • Rebuilt front brake calipers seals/bushings
  • Clutch master and slave cylinders
  • Cooling fan motors
    • New weather stripping around fan shroud

  • Replaced trunk and OEM wing w/ new wingless trunk
    • 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] brake light added to rear deck
  • Replaced pink tinted MSP tail lights with non-pink OEM Protege tail lights
  • Modified OEM Racing Beat rear sway bar w/ additional adjustment for stiffer setting

  • Custom coilovers
    • Single adjustable Koni 8610-RACE shocks
    • Ground Control spring perches/adjusters
    • Eibach and Hypercoil springs 400#F/350#R
    • Cusco camber plates up front modified for more than -3.5deg of camber

Issues:

  • Needs paint work on roof, front bumper, passenger door handles and drivers side of car
    • Clear coat peeling and oxidized, scratches on bumper
    • Car had hail damage fixed a few years ago and I think the polishing thinned the clear coat
  • Headlights are hazy sanded/buffed a few years ago
  • Some tears in the cloth seats and scratches in plastics
  • Steering wheel is worn common problem and already replaced once
    • I have the original if you want to reupholster it
  • Holes in floor boards from Autopower roll bar and harnesses no longer installed
  • A/C needs recharged I believe the low pressure hose is leaking
  • Kenwood amp/subwoofer box needs repaired car is so stiff the amp keeps falling down
  • New water pump makes noise brand new Bosch part, no leaks but it is noisy
Accident History:

  • T-boned on drivers side in 2004. Other driver at fault.
    • Both doors, drivers window and B-pillar replaced
    • Repaired by body shop in MD
    • Some body filler used on rear fender arch
    • Paint on inner door frames has cracked over the years
    • Car drives and aligns perfectly
  • Drivers door, re-skinned in ~2008 due to a hit and run in a parking lot
    • Covered under uninsured motorist policy
  • A few low speed bumps to the front bumper
I have babied this car despite enjoying it at the track. The car has some wear and tear but the original clutch, transmission, and engine are a testament to how well this car has been cared for. I can bore you for hours on every little detail of the modifications and history. Regular and preventative maintenance has always been performed to keep this car on the road. High quality Mobil1, Eneos and Motul fluids used.
