Hi all. I'm new to this site and found while researching my Tribute's engine problem.

The mechanic told me that my timing belt jumped and caused chaos and my valves hit the head. A friend's father said that is not possible since it is a chain, not a belt.
It's a 4cyl, 2.3 liter engine with 173K+ miles on it. I just replaced my a/c and struts. It was running fine and then one day it just start running real rough, real fast and I just made it to a garage where it is currently parked.

I'm wondering it it's worth having it rebuilt, replaced with a used engine, or if I should just junk it and buy a newer vehicle. Money is an issue(of course). Time is of the essence on my decision since I am renting a car for now.

Do any of you have some expert input that might help me make a decision?
