UPDTE:
I have installed the IR sensor, bought from the link above. It works great and I installed it in a removable cover behind the glove box door that was drilled to accommodate the switch. I set it on distance switch mode so that, when the door moves away more than 10mm from the sensor, it switches on and off when door is closed. Pretty happy with the results. Next up is a project to install under bonnet lights witch will use the same ir sensor but switched perhaps to detect a sweeping hand motion to activate and or de-activate.
