2003 Mazda Protege
Hey all, I was wondering on what everyones take on replacing the timing belt and water pump on a 03 Protege DX 2.0 is. The car just hit 70,000 miles. I know Mazda recommends replacing it at 105,000 according to the owners manual, but does it matter that the car is 12 years old? Should I replace them or wait till 105k?

You should definitely replace the belt, tensioner, idler, spring and water pump, the interval is 100k miles or 7 years.

Never done a timing belt before, these cars pretty easy?

Also RockAuto sells a timing component set. One is an Airtex and one is a DAYCO. It comes with waterpump, belt, tensioner, pulley, etc. What brand should I go with?

They both have the same components and the same parts warranty. I would go with whichever is cheaper. Yes timing belts are relatively easy on the FS protgs. the first time is always more tricky but it's easy

i have 2000 1.6.

it recently hit 110,000 miles so i was like time to change timing belt. Good decision, it had cracks all over it could have snapped any time.
If i was you i will push it till 90,000 before changing it.
