"Time Llimit Exceeded" message when phone won't connect

Mazda 3 Grand Touring
Have had my 3 for two weeks, and phone was connecting perfectly until today, when I get the message "time limit exceeded." Can't find in manual what to do about this. Do not have lofty goals for bluetooth, but do hope to be able to talk on phone hands-free. Thanks.
 
Unpair the phone and the car, then re-pair them. Sometimes these things hiccup. It has happened twice on my 1.5 month old 2016 CX-5
 
Did you have the smart key and phone in the same proximity (like same pocket, for example)?
These two items interfere each other.

This happened to me once with new phone and old CX9.
Unpairing and re-pairing can solve it, definitely.
Sometimes, just rebooting the cell phone works as well.
