My guess would be an intermittent short in the switch. The first part could be a short anywhere, but the second part pretty much has to be at the switch. It sounds like there may be some bits of metal floating around on/near the contacts. I don't know if there is any way to take that stalk apart and clean it out though, so you may need to replace the whole stalk.
