Quoted $350 from a Mazda dealer. Claimed 2 hours labor. I'm not gonna say who, because they've taken good care of me in the past. But, really?

Another Mazda dealer quoted $250 (parts included).

An independent guy quoted me $200, and that was $90 worth of spark plugs (that I can buy for $60) ... fair enough.

How do you guys fair?

I am tempted to do it myself, and well within my skillz range, but I am a little intimidated that I might run into trouble getting them out at 61K and 7 years.

Get some PBlaster. Try it yourself. If you still end up with a seized plug you can't get out, then take it to the shop.

Denso ITV20 (5339) or NKG NGK ILTR6A-8G (6510) are stock replacements. You need Iridium plugs (both those are) and they should be gapped .026-.028 inches.

EDIT:

You'll need a 5/8" spark plug socket and an extension (~8").

Question: NGK recommends .032 gap and Mazda recommends .028-.031.

What gives?

[edit] PS. My car is bone stock.

NGK ships the plugs with a .03 gap. Follow Mazda's recommendation and tighten them slightly.
