P5 grind when shifting into third gear

Like the title says guys my wife's P5 grinds when shifting into third not if I double clutch it does not grind or if I keep it in neutral till the RPM drop it goes in smooth. It only does this when going into third no other gears give me a problem. Any thoughts?

Your sychromesh ring is shot for that gear....

Guys, thanks for sharing all of this knowledge. Do you know a good place to buy the parts I need? or do you think is better to purchase another tranny?

I would try putting a better fluid in first to see if it makes it better, Either redline 75-90 or synchromesh.

It is not a simple task to pull the trans, split the case, replace and reassemble the gearset. It isn't that difficult if you have a shop, a lift and an experienced tech but it isn't something I would want to do at home unless I had the tools and time to do it. I would use OEM parts from Mazda and rebuild the existing trans over replacing it with a used trans, no telling the condition or how long 3rd will last in the new/used transaxle.

I agree on not doing it myself. I will try doing the fluid change. I guess the tranny has a drain plug but where should the new fluid be poured?
