The bulbs in the Protege's and Protege5's hazard lights switch, fog light switch, and interior lighting dimmer switch are identically-sized 12V microlamp bulbs that can be replaced with RadioShack part number 272-1092 (2 for $1.99). The RadioShack bulb is slightly longer, which does not cause any problem with installation or performance.

Edit: Also superbrightleds.com sells LED replacements for these bulbs, which includes the T1 socket (be sure to get red or green depending on your interior lighting):

The regular red LED is comparable in intensity to the stock/RadioShack bulb. However, the light is definitely a little redder than the stock amber color, which you probably wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it.

Replacing these bulbs is easy and takes 5-10 minutes. To replace the fog light switch and/or dimmer switch bulbs:
1. Remove the driver's-side side panel access to the dashboard using a flathead screwdriver with tape on the tip.
2. Disconnect the switch from its electrical connector.
3. Press on the upper and lower tangs of the switch inside the dashboard while simultaneously pushing out. The switch will pop out of the dashboard.
4. Locate the red or gray ~5mm base of the bulb and use a flathead screwdriver to gently unlock it by twisting it counterclockwise, the bulb/socket should drop right out.
5. Replace the bulb in the socket, using the burned out bulb as a model for how to twist the wires. Cut the wires to length.
6. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

Replacing the hazard bulb is similar from step 4 above. How to remove the hazard switch is documented elsewhere on this site under how to replace the bulbs in the HVAC control unit.
