Aftermarket Backup Camera with Mazda OEM Screen

I'm actually trying to go the other way, using the stock camera on an aftermarket headunit, but I figured this adapter would at least provide a starting point. Any idea on what amperage the factory rear camera runs at?

Did you actually get this to work?

Just came back from my Mazda dealer...got this installed:

https://www.ebay.com (commissions earned)

Works fine. They charged me 2.3 hrs. Total cost of parts, labour, taxes was CAD$440.00

Could have saved some money on labour. But did not want to risk damaging the trim. They did a neat job. No wires in sight anywhere. All trim firmly in place.

I have a GX (base trim) with convenience package....

Bought this https://www.ebay.com (commissions earned) It arrived 3 days after payment. It works as advertised and you don't have to solder anything but the instructions are virtually useless. You don't need any special tools to install it just a flat head screwdriver, a #2 phillips screwdriver, a 11 mm socket with a long extension, a drill and some electrical tape and maybe some silicon for weather proofing. It took me 2-3 hours total to install and clean up. It works great

Use this guy's walkthrough for running the cables it's not the exact same camera install location but it's extremely helpful. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123833868-Aftermarket-Backup-Camera-Running-Wires

And here's where he shows you how to remove the head unit and dash http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...t-Shiny-Trim-Head-Unit-and-Center-Floor-Piece

For 0920-401F connector, I saw different posts with inconsistant pin wiring.
some folk used 6C(R) as video +, 6D(B) as video ground, but someone else use 6C(R) as video ground and 6D(B) as video +. Can anyone clarify which one is the right way?

Thanks

See attached schematic and connector pinout...

I don't know how it is, but to me it looks like the red is +12V, black is ground and white is video signal. A camera needs these three signals to work.
I would put it in revers and I would measure those wires to be sure.

Wire 1: 6C(red) = video +; 6D(black) = video ground

Wire 2: 6C(red) = video ground ; 6D(black) = video +

Which one is the right one?
Thanks

I agree with tibimakai. Maybe that German guy's car is wired differently, but it looks wrong per the circuit diagram. Just test the wires to validate.

OK an update to this... Having just done this with my car today, I can tell you what works for a 2014 CX-5 Touring (at least).

Counter to all intuition and accepted usage, the German's guys diagram (second link) *IS* the correct one. Yes that's right, the Red wire (6C) is the negative video signal, and the Black wire (6D) is the positive video signal. Huh Mazda??

I can tell you that if you swap them (as I did originally), you'll get a very corrupted video signal... virtually total noise.

Anyway, here's a (hopefully) clear picture of what you have to wire to retain your factory camera for use with an aftermarket head unit, This is looking from the perspective of inserting pins into the factory harness plug. By the way, this connector has pins on 0.1" spacing, meaning you can use common PC double pin header strips as a plug (like these: http://www.vetco.net/catalog/images/VET-HEAD-DR-8-1.jpg). Just cut off a length of 3 (by 2) pins, and remove the two center ones. The four outer ones will plug in perfectly!

I'm trying to add a backup camera to a 2013 CX-9 Sport. Any reason to think the details here would differ? I'm hoping to use either a license plate frame camera or a replacement plate light camera (https://www.ebay.com (commissions earned)) instead of drilling into the tailgate. But, all of the options I've seen are 12v and the factory headunit puts out 6v. Any reason why pulling 12v for the camera from the reverse light and running the video wire up to the headunit wouldn't work or wouldn't be a good idea? (i.e. Does the headunit need to sense that current draw via the camera harness to work?) Found someone online who will sell the plug without the camera (for $50), so I can choose my own, but I'm not finding any 6v plate/light-based options.

Hello. I also want to add a back-up camera to my CX-5 which has the display. The local dealers are mounting the Mazda original back-up camera for 500 euros, including the necessary cables and man-power. I found a more easy solution here:
https://www.ebay.com (commissions earned)
Looking to the detailed description it seems like a thing that I can do by myself.
Has anyone here adopted this solution already ? Is it working good or not?
Thank you all and drive safe!

On another car, I tried a wireless backup camera and screen (from the 'Peak' brand). It was crappy - subject to interference through bad signal, and surrounding radio signals. The one you posted may be better, but I would not risk a wireless cam again, personally.

@RedBaron and @REDOTTERRICH: Thank you for sharing your information. I look forward to see how good is this wifi-android-camera. And I hope it will be good so your work will be fruitful.
@tibimakai: salut clujeanule ce traiesti visul american. toate cele bune!

Padwan, I installed yesterday.

Taking off all panels was hands down the easiest part. The rest of the install was easy as well. All in all it took me about 30 minutes.

I installed the camera and wifi transmitter into the reverse lights. While it works as it should, it does take a second for the transmitter to boot and the connection to establish. It's not bad if you are backing out of a spot and have time to wait, otherwise it's just too long for everyday application. I will be re-doing the power configuration. I plan to do a power adapter for the trunk outlet.

I will have to say that the picture quality is good. It was on par with my husband's stock camera in the Dodge Dart. There is a slight lag in live feed, but not enough to be of any negative affect I feel. If someone/something were to dart into my path, I would still have ample reaction time at the usual reverse speed.

All-in-all, I am very happy.

That is a very good news for me. Congratulations for a work well done. Can you give me a link with the product you bought? Thank you and all the best

And here is the link to the cam I bought:

The dealer sent it 2 day without me asking so that was a plus.
