Hi all!

Just another reference thread for those of you who want to see what a 10ft kayak and J-style carrier looks like on the cx5.

The kayak stayed very stable, even on bumpy roads and highway driving. 70mph cruising was fine. Fuel economy took a slight hit as expected, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I'm sure those things have enough engineering/development in them to make them safe, but I gotta tell ya' when I see a contraption like that on the freeway, my instinct is to stay as far away from it as possible! BTW: Don't they make a cover for the seating area that would close off the interior to wind, thereby minimizing the hit on drag and fuel mileage?

lol. Yeah, I don't blame you for being extra cautious. From it's appearance it doesn't seem too stable, but it's mounted on there pretty securely.

I always give some strong tugs or shakes to anything I mount on the roof before driving off. I wouldn't want to be responsible for having a kayak fly through someone's windshield of the freeway....That would be a bad day indeed.

They do make covers for the seating area, but I just never got around to getting one.

Hi all,
Still seems hard to find pics of gen 1 Cx-5s with 10ft kayaks. Just got my kayaks up on factory roof rails with yakima jayhook kayak mounts. Works pretty well.

Looks like you hook it under the hood in the front and just above the rear bumper. How does that work? Is there a special hook or something?

I have a couple questions for those who posted photos.. Or anyone that has experience with a j style rack on here...

There’s a good deal on a new Thule Hull A Port Pro around me and I’d like to get it, but I’m about to pull the trigger on some kayaks too. I’ll mostly be going by myself, but I’ll grab a second kayak for my wife or just to have for a friend.

The factory rails seem kind of short, but would I be able to slide that J Rack far enough over to also wedge/stack a 31” kayak on a majority of the rail?

The deal seems nice and I’d like to buy it, instead of wait for a matching rack at whole price to come in. Or purchase a rack that holds 1/2 Kayaks, which is what I really wanted, they just might not get here for another 12 days...

Dicks has a rack in the style I want by a brand called Field & Stream, but it has really bad reviews regarding hardware and it rusting, so I feel like that could be a waste of money if it isn’t of good quality..
