I was thinking more for the north east coast winter, my speed has a plastic cover and it helps with keeping the engine bay not as filthy. The Cx-9 has no engine cover.
It looks a bit small for a splash shield, the slots won't help there either. It also looks considerably thinner than other skid plates I've seen for off road use. Not sure I'd trust it for either function really.
