My '96 failed emissions because I had to replace my battery so the inspection station told me to drive it a while and then retest. When I retested it failed again. In searching the Internet I found I was supposed to run a "Drive Cycle", what ever that was. More searching lead me to find the real scoop, a Mazda document called "OBD-II Single drive mode" which details all the drive cycles for the various modes. This document can be found on the National OBD Clearinghouse website. The front page of the document lists the 1996 to 2003 years and models covered.

In my case the numbers are different from what I found posted on various forums. The worst part of the drive cycle is trying to find somewhere to drive the car at 13 to 36 MPH in 3rd gear for 13 minutes, approximately 7 miles as there does not seem to be any indication of stopping during that period.
