fog lights with out head lights on?

I should be attempting this in a few days. I was holding off because of the dynotronics tune.. didn't want any "electrical interference" according to the instructions but I just uploaded the file yesterday so yeah... i'll let you know. I already have the parts just need time now.

I have my LED rings in my headlights wired up as DRL's. I could give you some pointers on running the fogs up like that.

Huge Thanks

This will bypass your headlight dependent switch and turn the fog lights on when ignition is 'on'

Finding a power input. Remove battery for clearance then you need to access under the fuse panel to tap your power 'on' , I used the Fan1 relay .

Using a scotch lock(insulation displacement connection) tap into the power , and attach about 6 inches of wire .

Remove your Fog light relay . I put it into a non-wired empty slot , you can see it in the picture labeled "spare".

Last step. I ran the power wire up through an existing hole . Attached a male spade connector. Then slid it into the #30 slot in the fog light relay location.

I will likely make this last connection under the panel soon leaving nothing visible. I wanted to be able to disconnect easily while testing. We tried real hard to get the fog light switch to still work , but it would require more complexity.

Thank you, i uninstalled nothing, removed relay, use male connector to 30 pin, ran and piggybacked orange wire to my parking/ corner light, now fogs without headlights, and no flashing off fogs when using my brights, Thanks a ton!

Is there a DRL specific circuit in the U.S. 2? I can't seem to find info on it anywhere. Buddy of mine got cut off in his MINI 3 weeks ago and ended up backwards and on his side in a ditch. He walked away, but the car is no more. Lady said she never saw him. It was overcast, but not dark and now I'm concerned enough to try and retro DRLs into mine.

I'm not aware of a dedicated DRL circuit just waiting to be used in our car. I had to tap into another circuit that got power when the key was in the on position. I want to say it was FAN2, but you'll want to test to be sure.

StrangeP3rm,

I'm working on this right now. One question, and I hope you check the forum soon:

How the hell do I get the fuse panel out of the fusebox plastic case? I've been fighting with it for 30 mins already and I can't get it pulled out as you have it photographed. I unbolted the panel box from the engine compartment, but I can figure out how to get it to slide out. Thanks!!!

I figured it out.

There is a small flap that is held in by two plastic clips way down at the base of the fuse box feed (the one at the back left bottom of the fuse box). If you can pop those two clips (not easy as usual), then you can swing the left back corner of the fuse box surround open with two more clips. Then you basically pop the three little retainer clips you can kind of see from the top and poke a screwdriver into, then the fuse box will pull out of the surround. It's a b*tch though. Everything else worked like a charm.

Tip: The Fan 1 relay wire you want to tap into is green with a black stripe.

Fogs without headlights!!!

Not sure, never took mine out. I tried to get it from inside the fuse box

Don't know how I missed this . Glad you figured it out. In case anyone is wondering everything is still running as intended and I haven't had any issues.

I want remove the metal cap covering the bulb , you can see that it's held in place by a single screw . Has any one removed and disassembled the fog light ?

I've been wondering the same thing. I have seen a few times on eBay in the past, that there were some pairs of new JDM fogs (OEM?) for sale that seemed to be the same as ours, but there was no glare-blocker metal cap like we have. It would be a big improvement if that could be removed.

Update from my end:

I moved down to CA earlier this year. Without thinking much about it (since I don't know any other garages around here), after getting an oil change coupon from the local Mazda dealer, I took my car there for an oil change. Later that day I noticed my fogs were no longer on.

I can't believe that it was pure coincidence (although it could be), I think the tech may have done something (I found that someone had pulled on that wire and separated the spade from the wire). But I really can't figure out what else happened. I checked all my fuses, everything is fine (I think), and when I remove the wire with the spade, and put the fog relay back in place, the fogs work with the headlights as they normally should.

But when I remove the fog relay and plug the spade back in to slot 30 as I originally did, the mod does not work anymore. I even went as far as to take everything apart again, use a new scotch lock, re-trim the wires, and reattach the spade. It worked perfectly when I originally did it, but now it results in nothing. I can't figure it out.

I'm still tapped into fan relay power as before.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Go back to the dealer and tell them they were not authorized to perform any repairs or modifications to your vehicle and to fix what they broke. Print out a diagram of what needs to be done and tell them that you're calling corporate if they cannot get it working again.

If you get it working again, why not just punch out one of the empty spaces in the console and make that a fog light button?
