Ok so I have a fix...
I used this on my old car....

(there are many similar products in the US.
It just fits the entire fob, without having to remove the key.
I though if it were locked in this at the rear of the car (i have mine secured to the tow bar) it would be too close and activate keyless entry...turns out its just far enough away from the receiver to work.
Problem solved.
