Converting old LCD laptop screen to in-vehicle dvd screen?

This is just something I've been thinking about.

I have a nice portable dvd player, battery or 12v powered, but the screen is rather small.

The dvd player has both audio and video out. My gears are turning... If I have a video out signal, and I have a spare laptop screen, perhaps I could find/create a medium to install in the vehicle using 12v power source and output the display onto the laptop screen....

hmmm... looks hard.

Laptop screen isn;t like a Tv or a Monitor.. You cant just "Plug It In To DVI or HDMI" and make it work..

Looks like a waste of time... Yo...
its true its cheaper to buy one and it may seem useless. but wats the point of modding if u buy it made? back then u dont buy stuff made. u make it., thats what a real modder is...

if u are looking for screen i have a 12" lcd screen from a project i did for my old car 2k prelude. it came from an old sony vaio desktop pc. let me knw if ur interested. its missing the pcb board so u kindda have to mod the pcb.

i hope u know what u are doing cause its a b**** to make the pcb board to work with any screen. i think it would be easier if u buy a converter and gut it out and use the ciggy lighter plug.

It looks like it would be fairly difficult, but possible. Almost all laptop screens have a small ribbon type connector that would would need to adapt to the vga out in some way (unless the board you are looking at makes the conversion)

Then you have to make it look good, which may be even more difficult than making it work. It would be a lot of work to do it and do it right, but you should be able to make it happen.

The question becomes what is more valuable? Your time \ sanity or the cash to buy a ready made unit that is ready for install?

Personally I spend too much time away from my family as it is, so I usually opt to spend the money. I hate to spend money on things I know I can do myself, but kids are only little for a very short time, so time with them almost always wins.

thats why i always bring my boys with me when im in the garage show them and educate them on how things work. i just tell them its like legos and they feel happy cuz they feel like they are helping. personally i rather spend the money on my wife and taking out my kids to chuck e cheese. time spent educating them on car is as priceless as saying I DID THAT. its really sad how kids/teenagers now a days think they should just buy it rather than fixing it. i'm not contradicting u roadking but if u wanna talk about not spending time i work in california wife and kids are in montreal, canada so i'm guilty with not spending time with them, but when im home and i have to work on my wifes car i get them involve so when they grow up i'm hoping they would do the same with their kids,,, knowledge is power. and KNOWING is HALF THE BATTLE....YO!!!!!!!!!! JOE lol

heres a few of link that mite be able to help u out, modding or making a PCB board is not really difficult u need to figure out the pinlay outfor the video audio and the power

I prefer to built a mini PC (carputer) inside the CX9 to this. Then probably mount a decent size screen on the roof or something. So beside play DVD/VCD, I could connect it to the 3G (no 4G here in Australia) wireless modem and brows internet, play games, etc.

Here's a good old Cnet article on how to do that: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11198_7-6396851-1.html?tag=rb_mtx;wp_body

Note: this article was made in 2005, so price and specs might be outdated

Just out of curiosity, where do you plan to mount the 15" laptop screen?

I hear you on that one shortfuse. I would gladly show my kids how to fix things, just like my pops did for me.

Problem on my end is two little girls who are either way too little (1yo) or just not interested in cars yet ( my 5yo)
I will say they both love being around my Harley, they just don't find my cars as interesting. I guess they like loud pipes and chrome. I have to keep them both back until it cools.

Via aluminum arm (painted black) coming from the floor, would likely have to brace the arm with straps... I dunno.

im not familiar with the cx9 but on my wifes cx-7 i cut a small hole for the gutted 100watt inverter ( http://www.frys.com/product/6522113...++ITogOrg__.node3?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG) since inside that centerconsole/ armrest has a ciggy lighter adapter. i mounted the inverter inside so the plug would be facing back on the same console i added this bracket http://www.bundlecity.com/p-1680-pd...or-flat-panel-tvs-up-to-22-inches-swm050.aspx i really thought about doing a floor mounted one then i realize during summer or winter we have to go to the storage to grab some stuff and i need to fold down the seat so floor mount would be a big hassle for me. the inverter is not the same one i have but it has a usb charger too and 100watts

roadking girls are actually fun in my opinion but boys will be boys funny link i saw today with a modding her car http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...02298808.75835.280017232036729&type=1&theater lmfao

I will have to say the eye candy in that slideshow is rather nice, but its not exactly how I want to picture my girls and their cars down the road.

I'm thinking they will need to wear burqas when they get to be about 12 or so. I already tell my oldest that when she gets a cold it came from the boys in her kindergarten class. I know they will pay me back for everything I did when I was younger but I am going to do everything I can to delay it as much as possible.

Thinking about this thread, this is what I'm thinking would b the thing to do.
With SSD's getting bigger and somewhat cheaper than they have been would seem very feasible to do this.
Thinking the aft part of the center console could be modified with a DVD/Blue-Ray player and a hot swappable hard drive mount.
The SSD would be the boot drive and hold the OS and applications while the Hot Swappable Drive and Blue Ray could provide the Movie Files and Music Files.
Could use the Audio out to the Aux jack in the Console and look at doing a IR transmitter for Wireless head sets.
