So I'm looking at buying an 05 RX8 with 82K miles on it, but i have some questions.

About how many mile does the original cluth go before it needs to be replaced? I know it varies, but what is a resonable estimate?

Also does the replacing it involve removine the engine and transmission, or just the tranny?

I think you are worried about the wrong thing. With 82K you need to be concerned about compression not clutch life. The OEM clutch should have plenty of life in it. To change the clutch you only need to remove the trans.
 
Agreed. A clutch kit is a few hundred bucks.. But I've had cars with well over 100k on the OEM clutch. An RX8 engine with that many miles on it though? You're getting dangerously close to the end of the engine warranty.
