What did you pay for your CX-5?

I believe that the postings here are only for information. It's up to you how to interpret each transaction item. Whether 10.5% or 4.5%, what's the big deal? He paid what he believed to be good deal. We don't need to say if it was good or bad deal. It's his car now and let him enjoy new ride. Congrat rockethead26 and hope that you like the car. =;)

Thank you! Leaving right now for the 2 1/2 hour ride to Phoenix to pick her up.

Photos upon return tomorrow.

Again, I'm not picking on you.
I'm simply explaining, to everyone who might post here, what should be included in the dealer price and how to calculate your discount.

I'm not saying the doc fee should be included "as part of the MSRP" as you claim above.
I'm saying it should have been part of the "Selling Price" line in your original post.

Here is what you posted, which is incorrect...
MSRP/Retail $36,910.00
Selling Price $33,033.90
Total Savings $3,876.10 (10.5%)

Here is the correct way...
MSRP/Retail $36,910.00
Selling Price $35,230.90
Total Savings $1,679.10 (4.5%)

You have to factor all of those dealer charges in your "Selling Price." In my earlier example, what if dealers...
- Sold you the car for $1,000, then added a $32,000 doc fee.
- Sold you the car for $32,000, then added a $1,000 doc fee.
No matter what shell game the dealer plays with the numbers, you are still paying $33,000 for the car.

I think you're nitpicking a little bit. On a forum, such as this, it's more important to spell out the whole deal, than it is to worry about what one calculates their savings percentage to be. We're all capable of doing the math.

I wish all posters would be this detailed:

So here's my deal on a new (5 miles on the ODO) CX-5 GT Reserve in Soul Red. I initially wanted the Machine Gray, but this dealer only had the red which was my second choice. Kinda spiffy, huh? I'll be picking it up on the 16th.

I wanted the window tint and Smart Shield. I think the Smart Shield is a fair price, but not sure about the price on the tinting. Regardless, I am very happy. I also got anti-theft window etching and one year free scratch and dent removal at the dealership.

MSRP/Retail $36,910.00
Selling Price $33,033.90
Total Savings $3,876.10
Doc Fees $499.00
Window Tint $799.00
SMART SHIELD $899.00
Total Taxes $2,769.10
OTD Price $38,000.00

Congrats on the purchase!

I agree. If you contact say 3 or 4 dealers and push hard for the best deal based on your pricing research you did fine. Don*t worry about what % discount you got.

@JT2, very well said.

Utilizing MSRP in a "savings discount" discussion and/or negotiation puts a smile on any dealer's face. The amount of money people agree to pay for cars above invoice, and then finance on top of that, is absurd. Reality is, anything above published dealer invoice is a negative percentage (to you) and anything below is a positive savings (for you). Invoice is never the true dealer cost for any vehicle.

To the points of the posts above, provide simple numbers, and all of the numbers, then readers can glean what they need to know from the transaction. The 12 vehicles below were the only ones that remained on a list of more than 27 after initial email contact requesting quotes for "best price below invoice" requiring quotes to provide all costs broken down (my requirement) that would show up on a final purchase deal. 2-1/2 weeks of email work sitting on the couch in the evenings. Take notice of the VIN of the #1 vehicle which I ultimately purchased. I wagered myself when the list was nearly 2x larger and the OTD prices were still in flux, that would be the vehicle that I'd end up buying. One of the oldest ones sitting on the lots of theses dealers that wanted to play including, and especially, the dealer where it was purchased.

The following data from my spreadsheet is old, but the process wouldn't change if I were looking to buy today:

FWIW, Mazda just did a mid month change to the CX-5 customer cash (in my zip code, east coast). Now $1500 across all trims. It was $500 when I got my Reserve 4 weeks ago.
It looks like they also upped it out west from $1500 to $2000 on all trims.

yes sir, now is a great time to buy...lots are full, sales are down, end-o-year is fast approaching, and the new MYs are hitting lots.

Alright, how did I do?

Enjoy the ride.

I actually waited an extra week and Mazda added another $500 rebate! Plus they plugged in the wrong city tax on our negotiated price so the sales price had to be lowered to accommodate the higher tax. New price is $33,500 and included all weather mats and cargo tray! Out the door $36,750 for a sig.

That*s nice for the signature.
Enjoy the ride.

So, you're saying if he paid full MSRP/Retail, all the added items would be included?

Any thoughts on forwarding emailed quotes to other dealers? I've been collecting OTD quotes by email and had a couple of dealers request me to forward lower priced quotes to them.

Bluegrass made a mistake - Selling price is 33033 + doc fee which is $499. Doc fee is not a state mandated thing in many states. Infact it is negotiable and direct profit for dealer.

All others are dealer add ons - which the dealer will charge for.

Now in this case and only in this case - rockethead was ripped off.

Smart Shield is an armor all protective coating for 899 - no detailer in the detailing world uses armor anything. Its lowest of the low and no body likes it.
799 for tint on a car where except front two windows and windshield everything else has darkened privacy glass - is a rip off if the windshield doesn't have a tint and that too everything ceramic 3M.

Opt out of Armor Shield + talk down the price of tint.

I don't forward anything to another dealer. I give them each their own chance first & follow up with MY final offer to them. Some you never hear from again while others will negotiate.

To clarify,

I did say that some states set a limit on how much the dealer CAN charge, not the minimum, even so I know that a $499 charge represents about $450 in profit for the dealer. Nobody would negotiate on that.

Second, yes Smart Shield is an Armour All product and is widely dissed on car forums. Nothin' I could do about that either. At least it came with clear edge guards on all four doors. Add-on was also non-negotiable.

Third, the tint was applied to all the windows including the windshield, so I didn't feel too bad about that.

The funny thing was that with the $1700 worth of add-ons, the dealer was still $800 below any competitor except the one 5 hours away.

That's the way it shook out.

Rockethead, you did fine. You got the car you wanted at the best price you could find. That's all that matters. Enjoy the ride!

Hello all, new to the forum here. I joined the CX-5 owners club this past Saturday. I've had my eyes on the CX-5 Sig or GTR all year and finally noticed that 2020s were showing up at dealers. If I was going to get a deal, this would be the best time, while there was still a little selection of 2019s left. I thought I would low-ball a bit just to see if they would bite, thinking they wouldn't...but they did. With a low-ball from me and a little haggling, I landed a GTR for $31,900 + tax + title + tag, or $32,700 out the door. I felt pretty good about that. I love the GTR! Now seems to be a great time to buy!

Congrats on the Reserve. Decent price.
I replaced my first GTR 5 weeks ago with it's clone (first was rear ended & totaled). I did the same low ball tactic. I figured the worst they could do is say no. Out of 7 dealers one accepted my offer which also happened to be a local dealer who had it in stock. I never heard back from the others.

Yeah, I'm glad it's over with. I consider buying a new car almost as fun as major dental surgery. So many variables in getting a deal, it's a huge time sink to get even an OK deal.
