Mazda Miata NA 1990
I have been tracking the economy of my until recently 3 vehicles, just sold the motorcycle, on

http://www.fuelly.com/car/mazda/2

and notice that there only 3 Mazda 2s and 2 of them are outside of North America!

This site is good for both Canadian and USA users as well as international users as one can select Metric, US gallons or imperial at a click of the mouse

My 1990 Miata has been tracked for some time and I'm very interested in the Mazda 2 results having driven both it and the manual Fiesta and much preferring the 2

Looking forward to seeing some posts

The articles that I have read where they compared the 2 with the fiesta (manuals both) have shown that they average around the same mpg (mazda 2 beat out the fiesta but didnt beat the fit in the comparo). My mazda 2 has been averaging 41mpg (6.6l/100) which is even better than my bike (05 zx6r). Where abouts in burnaby are u? I live near edmonds!

6.6l/100km is 35.64 mpg (US) or 42.8 mpg (UK). There is a 20% difference between the US and UK (Canadian) gallons. It's good mileage, but not great mileage. On average, my P5 gets just under 30 mpg(US) during the summer. We had a Chevy Lumina that would consistently get 30 mpg on the highway. With the cooler weather (crying out loud, we had a blizzard yesterday!), my mileage is dropping.

Our second tank of gas achieved 36.6 mpg. I took the car for a drive a few days ago and filled up when I was finished. It manage 40.6 mpg. I'm not certain how much the slight tail wind in places impacted that number, but it was 40.6 mpg all the same after putting 5.536 gallons in for the fill-up.

my old chevy lumina would also get 31mpg on the highway, but it would get 13-18 mpg in the city. my p5 has been struggling to get 28 mpg on the highway. 35 mpg doesnt seem like much better, but i bet it would still get better than 30 in the city.

I live by brentwood mall. The best mileage I've been able to get so far is about 30MPG with a combo of city/hwy.

My trip computer has me averaging 39 MPG with mostly rural driving, 35 to 65MPH and No Ethanol regular.

The 2 is about the driving experience rather than ultimate mileage much like the Miata

Another BC owner is keeping an accurate record
I think that you are probably getting better than you think

check this out, it would be interesting to see what you get would you consider joining?

So I did some driving for pleasure, and then for some economy... and here are some numbers :D

I wanted to see what is a top speed, and offcourse fuel consupmtion when I push 2 to the limit :D

35km was on highway, and 70km on open and winding roads...

First, average fuel consumption on highway was 10.5 liters, nearly on maximum speed 120-125mph, after that, consumption decrease on 8.5 liters with speed around 60mph, average speed on BC was 54mph..

After that, BC was restarted and heading back home, but, only open roads, 100km. Average consumtion was 4.9 liters, with average speed of 35mph, but speed was always around 50-60mph...

So, pedal 2 the metal 10.5L, 5L if you don't push it..... so average would be like 8 liters, and I get that in combo city/open... half a liter or even a liter less would be better, but it is hard not to push it :D

Well, I've had my 2 for just over 2 weeks, and already 1600 kms (yikes!) and I am averaging about 6.6liter/100 kms, so it's not bad, but I expected it to be better than my older Toyota Corolla by far, but it really isn't that much better. Ah well, so much fun to drive!

I should get on fuelly, but my average seems to be holding steady at ~8L/100km combo. I do tend to drive for pleasure not for enconomy, but it's a helluva lots better than the 13-14L/100km my RX-8 eats

Fuel mileage is a funny thing with this car, it would seem. A few quick notes, based upon 6000 miles since September.

1. Average MPG (calculated, not indicated) is 36.9
2. High MPG is 39.7
3. Low MPG is 29.6

It would seem that the car (2011 Sport) actually gets better gas mileage around town than on the highway. This is based on observations made during a recent trip from NYC to Road Atlanta, about 1600 miles round trip over two days. Pure highway cruising between 70-75 with the cruise on resulted in the 29.6 tankful. Interestingly, it was right after the 39.7 tank.

Using the cruise and setting the speed at 70 raised the MPG a little, but not much, up to the low 30's over the next few tanks. NOT using the cruise and stepping the speed back up to the middle 70's raised the number back to the middle 30's.

Cruise control kills the economy in this car. Why? Because the darn thing is trying to maintain the preset speed regardless of terrain. Going uphill on the cruise resulted in the MPG indicator showing numbers in the low 20's and high teens on occasion. This was apparently not offset when coming down the hill on the other side.

Speed kills the efficiency as well, surprising for a small motor, highly aero efficient, low rolling resistance car. Anything much above 72 (approx 3,000 RPM) sustained drives the mileage in the dumpster.

Around town MPG is fine, but I drive the thing like a little old lady and short-shift the daylights out of it - I'll buzz the thing all the way 2,000 RPM and call it a day and get gas mileage in the upper 30's routinely. (If I want high revs I've got a pair of Miatas, one race, one street, for that.)

It would seem the car needs either a taller fifth gear or an overdriven 6th. I can understand the reasons for Mazda not doing so (cost and the possiblity that the car doesn't make enough torque to carry OD at highway speeds), so I live with it. It's the only fly in the ointment of anotherwise fun car.

Well that, and the exhaust is too damned quiet!

all mazda manuals have short gears.

the manual p5 is worse than the 2. (3200-3300 rpms @ 70mph)

i notice the cruise issue like you have but with my p5. the car tries to speed up too much on the hills and kills the fuel economy.

interesting thread, because I've thought of getting a 2 in a few years. the mazdas I've had have never been mpg champions; I had '86 and '87 GTI's that could get in the low 40's hwy! the 2 being a smaller car w/ 20 years of technology would do a bit better than that.

I'm getting 29 city 31 hwy using the hand calculation method. I drive the piss out if it when I can though!
