3m carbon fiber wrap...

Recently I have been researching carbon fiber wrapping, as in wraping real carbon fiber over the part desired just to give it that look. The process involves prepping the surface, mixing up some epoxy and laying down the fiber... I am pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem for me as I have experience with fiberglass and I know it's not the same but it's similar.

I stumbled upon this 3m carbon fiber wrap... Basically it's like a vinyl sheet that sticks to the surface and can be further worked in with heat. Real carbon fiber is expensive, and so is this... but this would be all I need, no extra supplies (paint brushes, mixing bowls, epoxy, hardener, etc)

I am probably looking to do my glove box and a few more interior pieces, I would also like to do the small black lip piece on the front of my MP3. If anyone has experience with this please share, if not I guess i'll be the first.

It still looks like it has alot of air bubbles under neath it, how ever thats sweet how he wadded it up like that and then it came unwrinkled that much.

I'm going to wrap my DGM Front Lip so I'll post pictures when I'm done. I'm also thinking of wrapping my entire center console too.

You'd probably want to vacuum bag it too unless you make a mold... a good surface finish with CF can be tricky. Or a top-coat of epoxy and some sanding. If you do decide to go that way you might want to consider buying your equipment from these guys:

http://sollercomposites.com/

They've got great starter kits and some awesome mixes so you can choose CF+color if you'd like. They've even got some aluminized fabrics so you can rock gold or silver. The bodywork for the racecar in my sig was made almost entirely with supplies from Soller, and the gold texalium accent looked awesome.

Good luck either way!

that stuff looks pretty sick... i wonder how it holds up and what would happen if you was to shoot some clear over it

dang it looks very good.... i'm still wondering what it looks like with a few coats of clear over it.... if i do this to any exterior parts i wanna shoot some clear over it so i can treat it like paint

I'd be worried about scratches or ripping it. CF can take some abuse, but I know vinyl doesn't like it rough, and it likes to tear and start to peel.

But....... I am surpised how good it looks. But the pic of the wing I can tell its not real CF. Maybe like said above, I wonder what coat of clear will do to it. I wonder if clear would stick? Might start flaking?

Not really sure what clear would do, I'm told that 4-5years outside it will hold up and 12years inside. The Wrap is pretty tough and pliable, you are able to stretch it when you heat it up.
Dry Carbon Wrap is a type of vinyl that are designed for wrap applications.
It has a textured weave pattern replicating dry carbon fiber. The resemblance is truly amazing. It has an interior lifespan of up to 12 years, and features 3M's Controltac™ Plus Graphic Film with Comply™ Performance.

That is 3M's fancy speak for the sticky backing. The adhesive is designed to be used in wrap applications and is able to be lifted and repositioned until the proper look is achieved. The cross pattern helps in working out air bubbles, providing you with a channel. Once pressure and heat are applied, it's done.

Stop fighting with fabric. Fabric is not designed for wrap applications. It is constantly trying to return to it’s original shape. This means it is working against the spray glue holding it to your surface at all times.
Vinyl that is heated for a short amount of time with a heat gun will change shape. This means your wrap job will stay put.

Features:
-Best imitation of real carbon fiber on the market. When rotated, the weave actually reflects light, and the black/gray will change to gray/black.
-Dry Carbon look at a fraction of the cost
-Dry Carbon wrapped parts that were never possible before.
-Up to 12 year indoor, and 4 year outdoors life.
-No spray glue involved- just peel and apply.
-Waterproof, spillproof.
-Available in up to 48" widths.
-Easily cleaned with shampoo and water.
-Sold by the linear foot.
-Have any stubborn corners? Just use 3M Primer 94 to make it stay.
-Easily applied with a squeegee sold at any craft store
