Door Edge Guards?

My garage walls have a strip of foam pipe insulation attached horizontally where the doors would hit if they were let go while opening. Works great, especially with my block wall garage.

petesamprs,

can we get an 18-month update from you? i'm looking to add the same bell edge guards and want to know how they've held up. then again, they're so cheap, i guess it's no big deal to replace them if they start coming loose. i found them here for $2.35 + free shipping:

http://www.drillspot.com/products/427842/bell_sports_inc_00102-8_door_edge_guard

also, for the rear doors, did you just bend the guard around the corner of the door, or did you cut and miter the ends of the guard pieces?

One word of caution on the edge guards is that they may rub the paint off on the jamb areas if they touch. The ones i installed must be slightly bigger than what others are using, because I have noticed this occurring with mine.

Good point, Aron. The ones from drillspot are very slender and do not touch the jamb.

One word of note if you do use those -- they have adhesive inside to help the guard stay put. Wait a while after installation before you drive at high speed on the highway with a heavy headwind. I lost one that way. No biggie (easily replaceable) but the adhesive made a mess when the guard came off.

So how's everyone enjoying their door edge guards? Anyone have a status update or new ones to tell us about? I just traded my 2002 Protege5 (*sniff*) for a CX-9 (*yeah!*) and am considering buying door edge guards. Below is what I've researched so far, and am leaning toward the black Bells:

- there are basically 3 kinds: a thin, clear layer or protection (i.e., 3M product); a thicker, somewhat flexible plastic bumper in a variety of colors; and a thicker, rigid plastic guard that is not very long
- bumper-style guards can trap gook so transparent ones can look crappy fast

I have the drillspot black ones on my black cx-9. My wife didn't notice for a couple of weeks that I added them, I had to tell her. Quality is good. One thing that's not perfect is the topmost part does not fit 100% right. Maybe I should have cut it more at an angle. Experiment with it and get the best angle. Straight across doesn't look or fit just right. The front set don't need to be cut, just the rear. It could be good to cut the fronts just to get an angle on them to make them sit right. I'll try to take a pic later.

here's a quick snapshot.

I think the carbumper ones won't look as good - looks like they stick out too much.

I put the Bell sub $3 jobbies on the back 2 doors of my 2011 today. They fit well. I only covered the vertical edge of the door, not the wheel well (seems like I saw some pics where others went a bit further). I have't done the fronts as they're not long enough to go along the entire length of the door edge. What is everyone else doing here? Only covering part of it (seems like it will look hokey) or using 2 pieces and hiding the spot where the 2 meet? I may leave them off and just assume the driver and front seat passenger know better than to chip the door paint.

Seriously, all door panels should be made of foam.
That is what I believe in....

Well if you look back a few posts you can see that it has been about 2 years now since I installed my guards and they are no longer on my car. They lasted about 18 months (2 summers) before the glue started to break down and the guards started falling off. They leave a nasty black residue on the edges that takes a while to rub off...but again they were super cheap so did their job.

Yep, I took mine off also. I was originally worried that my kids would open the big CX9 doors into other parked cars but it was never an issue and when the glue started letting lose, the edge guards started coming off, I decided to remove them. Unfortunately they did rub through the paint in a few spots & I've had to touch up paint to repair.

Never did like the looks of them, but I was hopping to prevent damage to other cars.

OK I can say the drillspot edge guards last about 18 months or less. They start falling off in the summer heat, leaving behind a lot of glue residue. It's hard to clean, even with goo gone / goof off, but it eventually cleans up.
