Alright I need help!!

MP3Night

Boost feels so good
:
Mazda Protege MP3
After getting destroyed at racing countless times tonight at a car meet I REALLY want to turbo now. I need help on putting together a turbo Kit. I'm low on funds right now because I have to pay for school in the fall so I cant diss out 1500 bucks right now, but I can slowly piece together a kit for myself and hopefully turbo by the end of this year. So first off I know a need a MPS ECU with a piggy back ssafc ECU I need a front mount intercooler, a Turbo and Turbo Manifold....what els?

I know its not a easy thing to do, so that's why I'm starting this thread.

there are a ton of threads on this already...and if you're going to school, shouldn't your priority be that and not something that could blow your engine up??

Racing at a car meet.. very nice. I can't say I approve of that, but whatever.. it's your choice. The basics you need are this.

Turbo manifold
Turbo
Oil feed/return lines
Coolant feed/return lines
Downpipe

Intercooler
Pipes
Blow off valve
Intake

MSP ECU
VTCS solenoid & ECU pin (MP3 doesn't have VTCS wiring, you'll get a CEL and bad idle with MSP ECU unless you wire up a VTCS solenoid to the ECU plug so the MSP ECU sees it)
Fuel management (SS AFC works very well with the MSP ECU)
Boost gauge (essential)
Wideband gauge (essential)
Oil pressure would be a good idea too

Millenia-S PCV valve
MSP check valve from purge solenoid to catch tank (prevents your fuel tank from seeing boost)

Oil cooler (it's not very smart to skip this step)

That's pretty much my setup right there. If you promise not to street race anymore, I'll help you as much as I can.

Yeah I know, I was just wanting to start my own thread on it. Yes school is my top priority and will always be in order for me to be successful in life, that's why I'm paying for it. thanks for your concern honestly (I'm not being sarcastic)

I promise I wont race again seriously, especially after what I saw almost happen between a GTO and STI with 500whp+. I just hate when I'm trying to get over and some Toyota truck over takes me and I can't pull up to get in front of him. Plus I enjoy working on my car and I just want to take the next level on the car and learn more.

Fair enough, it sucks having a slow car.. it's a serious disadvantage in traffic sometimes.

If you really want to turbo, try to get your hands on a MSP turbo kit. That includes the MSP manifold, turbo, lines, and oil cooler. You'll have to find these parts used but they will make your install exponentially easier than if you went with some sort of DIY kit where you have splice and tap all sorts of lines.

As for fuel management, use the MSP ECU and SS AFC. See this thread about using a non-MP3 ECU and avoiding the VTCS check engine light.

You'll need this check valve installed so your fuel tank doesn't start acting up under boost.

And this PCV valve to prevent oil loss.

Just keep in mind that with a turbo, things get a lot hotter. An oil cooler is a must as you will either fry the bearings in the turbo or lose lots of oil if you don't get one. A boost and wideband gauge will be your very best friend when it comes to tuning, but keeping an eye on your oil pressure is also very important because the oiling system of these cars is crap. Far from satisfactory for a turbo engine.

As far as the intercooler goes, I would suggest the Altered Customs kit. It fits without any major cutting and it's cheap. The HKS SSQV BOV is also a good choice, and as far as intake is concerned you'll need to custom make something or use an SRI. You can't have a CAI with the Alt Cust FMIC.

There ya go, happy parts hunting.

Awesome help, thanks. Yeah thats's what I'm talking about during traffic its hard having a slow car, but I still love my MP3. Would it be cheaper if I put a oil cooler kit together my self or about the same if I just bought the kit from Protege Garage?

we don't offer full kits right now but we can start you off in the right direction

I would recommend the SS AFC as well, works great and allows the user to change the map as needed. And for the FMIC kit, thank you KrayzieFox, I just updated my site last night :) I'm also going to be able to offer a lot more on my website soon.

So I would get the FMIC Kit #1 MSP 5.5?

Would I aslo need to get the piping kit too?

Metallic's FMIC kit comes with the core, pipes, couplers & clamps. All you need is a BOV and pipe adapter of choice and an intake. That takes care of the "intake" side of the turbo build.

As far as exhaust goes, the turbo manifold replaces the stock exhaust mani and if you go with the MSP setup just get the MSP S-pipe (downpipe) as well. The j-pipe portion of the downpipe is the same on the MP3 as it is on the MSP. Then get a nice j-pipe back or catback 2.5" or 3" exhaust and that takes care of the exhaust side of things.

Give the kid a break ! Life is rife with pursed-lipped naysayers wagging their fingers and yapping about reigning yourself in.......dream turbo and dream BIG !
There's plenty of middle-age to sit around in and be remorseful about that cute brunette that got away or the turbo car you almost built....go for it (usa)

You would have to get some sort of EMS in order to have a map on the EMS.. it then connects/splices into wires on your ECU and replaces the ECU signals with the ones from the EMS.

i also wana get my na 2004 mazda3s turbo'd a buddy of mine told me they had a turbo that had everything on it manifold turbo intercooleer etc its called trypoint engineering check them out i still havent been myself but i heard they aint that expesnseive

so your saying I could run a hook up to my laptop so I could run the mapping program in my car?

They only sell Mazda3 Turbo kits

Yup, with the Split Second AFC you can change the map, load it, etc. through your laptop.

The best way to do your turbo project is to just start collecting the parts you need as you find them. That way you can get deals when you see them pop up.

Yeah I'm going to collect the parts I wasn't going to buy a kit, if your talking me.

Where could I find mapping programs for the ECU?

The SS AFC comes with R4 software that you hook up to your laptop using a Serial to USB cable.
https://www.ebay.com (commissions earned)

Here is the driver you will need for the cable. It's the 3rd one down in the USB and Firewire section (DX-UBDB9)
http://www.dynexproducts.com/t-drivers.aspx

Once you install the software and drivers, you can load any map you'd like. Here is a compilation of some of the more efficient maps created so far. The SS AFC will come with the Supermap loaded, but there are others available.

If your car buckles, get ahold of me and I'll forward you a map that JamesK sent me to fix the hesitation.
