Accessory Belt

I had a question regarding my accessory belt. I was driving on the highway going home, the check battery light went on, the heater turned to ice cold temp., then the temp. started rising. So, anywho, I need to change the accessory belt. I'm a girl and do not have much experience with cars ... I'd rather much work on it myself then take it in and pay for it to be changed. I heard that it's an easy fix ... I don't have the manual ... So, some directions how to change the accessory belt and some diagrams would help if you all can provide them. Looked all over the internet and have yet to find a diagram. So any amount of help works. Thanks!

hey i think thta i can help you. First you should have two belts. Since you said that the alternator light came on then it is your outside belt. Which also drives you water pump. See one belt drives the a/c and the pwer steering pump and the other drives the water pump and the alternator. If it is that one then you are going to need to take of the other belt (that is if you have to which you should). All you do is loosen the power steering pump at the joint where it bolts to the engine. Losen but do not remove. Then if you look down on the side of the engine you will see the adjuster. You will need to loosen that up and loosen the adjuster bolt. Eventually the belt will be able to come off. After you get that belt of you are going to need to loosen the alternator bolt at the bottom of the altornater. Your best bet is to get under the car and loosen it. Then around the alternator you will need to find the same kind of adjuster. Loosen that up and then start to loosen the adjuster bolt at the back of the alternator. Once it is lose enough you should be able to get it off. Then to put them back on just go in the reverse order. Hope that helped you.

By the way you are going to need, if i remember correctly, both 14 and 12 mm sockets or wrenches which ever you have. I'll post some pics soon to try to help explain the directions.

here is simple way, loosen the 2 bolts that hold the ps pump, turn the belt tensioner bolt, remove belt, reach down behind the alt. and there is 2 bolts behind it.. losen them, next loosen the belt tensioner bolt almost all the way.. put on belt, pull the alt to tighten belt and tighten the adjustment bolt, until belt tight, tighten the two bolts that hold the alt, then do the same with the ps pump.. and you are done..

yeah i went to that link to see what it said and its talking about pulley removal and instalation. doesn't really have anything to do about changing the belts. i mean is has the bolt and stuff to remove but note really something that would help me if i needed it. i like what i said and what dstmsp03 said. straight to the point. not to bash on the link or anything but thats just personal preference.

honestly easiest way.. if i can do it at night on a gravel road with no street lights.. someone can do it middle of day

yeah i aggree i changed both my belts in about 1 hour. Not to hard to do. a little difficult to get the alternator one cause of where it is at. but not hard to do at all.

Thanks Everyone! I actually just replaced both belts ... Thought it would be the smartest thing to do ... They will at least wear evenly ... I'm having problems with a squeeking noise now ... The power steering fluid is leaking onto the belts and they still are a little lose ... Going to adjust them soon ... Thank you for all the help!!(kiss)

wait there should not be PS fluid leaking??? where is it coming from

also if you are squeeking with a new belt then something either isnt tight enough or not on all the way..

be careful with the ps leak. my 91 escort gt had a ps leak that leaked on the belts and it ended up causeing my belt to break

After the belts were put on, they were fine for about two days. I'm in Washington state, so we are known for rain. I thought that the noise it was making was because it was wet. Well, unfortunately that is not entirely true. My dad looked at the belts and we actually got into an argument about it. But I was told by my ex the belts were too lose. I had a mechanic look at the car and he said that there was PS fuid leaking onto the belts. And that the belts could use a little more tightening. When the belts were put on, i did'nt place the belts on myself ... I watched and "assisted" my dad ... But yeah, the mechanic placed his finger under a place where there was oil leaking and we looked down onto the belts and underneath there was oil ... My dad is being ignorant and not even trying to look at the car, so I'm kind of stuck driving it the way it is. Not sure what to do, I'm being told two different things ... Not listening to the dad is also making him pissed yet he wont help and take a look at it himself

where is it leaking exactly???and if you push down in between two pullies you should be barely able to move it....fix the leak, pull the belts and clean the oil off belts and pully(ies) and then put back on....if it squeaks...tighten a lil bit more....still squeak tighten a lil bit more

I got the belts tightened ... So they are no longer squeeking ... the PS pump is bad now ... I have to have one put in ...
