Intermittent starting problem

2002 Protege w/mt and 57k will not start intermittently. With clutch engaged and tranny in neutral, starter spins but does not engage. New battery. Figure bad solenoid but why intermittent?

After several tries car usually starts. If not, letting it sit for a while works. Full turn of ignition switch is worse than partial turn. Not a problem if car is facing downhill (car is in hilly San Franciso). This showed up three weeks ago and has not gotten worse (according to driver).

Anyone hear of other (non-EGV) causes before assuming its the starter?

Thanks!

Note: already have starter replacement directions

I have had the same problem. Had something to do with gunk directly under the shifter. I have it again though... my only solution is to take the parking brake off and let the car roll to where it settles, then I can start it up. Ghost in the tranny???

The starter could still be bad even if its turning. It has to throw that gear out and catch the flywheel and turn. Could be that part of the starter is bad. Thats probably it if the starter is turning but the engine isn't.

sounds like the solenoid isnt moving up to spin the starter. common problem, especially on ford's, lol
