Mazda5 reliability - how does it compare?

You spend a lot less and likely get better quality parts :)

WRT to the survey, this is not a problem. One question on the form asks who performed the repairs, and DIY is an option. The main difference is that you then report hours instead of days.

First point, totally agree. ;)

Good to know it's accounted for in the survey- I'll go check it out now.

We have updated our car reliability stats for the Mazda5 to include owner experiences through December 31, 2012.

Already part of TrueDelta, have been reporting on it for years with every vehicle I've had. My Mazda 5 since it was new.

I think it's a great idea, and glad you're doing it.

New stuff this time. We've updated our reliability stats for the Mazda5 to include owner experiences through the end of 2014. Plus we've added reliability trends graphs. These indicate how a model's reliability has changed as it has aged, and how different model years performed when the same age.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2012 Mazda5: 17, low
2010 Mazda5: 35, low
2009 Mazda5: 31, low

So, how have these cars been doing lately?

Our reliability stats for the Mazda5 now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):

2012 Mazda5: 16, low
2010 Mazda5: 43, low
2009 Mazda5: 48, low
2008 Mazda5: 61, moderate
2007 Mazda5: 87, moderate, small sample size
2006 Mazda5: 39, low

Plus, the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2010 Mazda5: 57, < 1

No stat for a model year? Then we very much need more participants for it. Same for those with small sample size notes. Next updates in August and November.

That's only because the site only asks to report repairs. I am sitting on a ton of problems that I haven't addressed. In fact, over the course of 3 days, I saw 4 (FOUR) different Mazda5s - including mine - that had a missing cargo door handle.
To sum up my opinion: Engine is reliable. Transmission is also OK. Overall package is fun and inspires a bond between owner and car, but far, far, far too many other parts of this car are really underengineered POS. If I had fixed everything on this car when it happened, I'd be making 3+ repair efforts a year, easy.

Our reliability stats for the Mazda5 now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind, and so report how these cars were doing when a year younger.)

Repair trips per 100 cars:

2012 Mazda5: 10, low
2010 Mazda5: 42, low
2009 Mazda5: 59, moderate
2008 Mazda5: 67, moderate
2007 Mazda5: 104, high, small sample size
2006 Mazda5: 54, low, small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2012 Mazda5: 88, < 1
2010 Mazda5: 59, < 1

If a model year isn't listed, or its sample size is small, then we especially need more owners involved.

You're certainly welcome.

2008 Mazda5: 79, moderate
2007 Mazda5: 111, high, small sample size
2006 Mazda5: 64, moderate, small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2012 Mazda5: 92, < 1
2010 Mazda5: 63, < 1

Just a quick update on reliability for my 2008 Mazda5. I bought it second hand last April, it is the 2.0 turbo diesel French spec. When I bought it it had a host of problems, mainly manifesting themselves by DPF and Engine lights. It was under warranty from the dealer I bought it from, so it did not cost me to have repairs done. First came a new DPF filter, then a sensor. Numerous regenerations later, and four months, the problem still wasn't cured. Intervention from Mazda France, they removed the injectors and sent them for testing, resulting in two of them being replaced. Yet more testing by Mazda saw a major software upgrade to the ECU. This still did not cure the problem, and this was after a further six weeks! Finally they called in a local software expert who spent a few days tweeking the ECU software. The results have been worth it. It has now been 2 months and I have done over 2000 miles hard driving and the motor has performed perfectly. It has also been returning an average of 5.7 litres / 100 km, that is 49.7 uk mpg.
I know there are many posting about Mazda 5's DPF faults/problems. It appears to me that the problems are in the ECU software and not the engine, sensors or filters.

We've updated our reliability stats for the Mazda5 to include owner experiences through the end of 2015, about eight months ahead of other sources. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year--lower is better:

2012 Mazda5: 4, low
2010 Mazda5: 36, low
2009 Mazda5: 84, high
2008 Mazda5: 77, moderate, small sample size
2007 Mazda5: 126, high, small sample size
2006 Mazda5: 85, moderate, small sample size

No stat, or a small sample size? Then we especially need more owners involved for that model year.
