I did what your talkin bout on my civic
I got it worked out,,for good application go to home-depo ,ace hardware ECT..
look for 3M and ONLY 3M surface prep pad it kinda looks like a scouring pad
get the "purple" one(different colors eqaul different grit) and sand everwhere that needs to be painted (u wont beleive the stuff it'll take off..oil,grease,rust with very little effort)
then paint light coats apprx 3 coats ,,I used (cuz i had it lying around) Rust-O-leum mica blackish grey stuff a bought a Wal-Mart ,Wasnt HighHeat paint or any thing like that and it looks GREAT
I dont think the heat thing is overly important cuz i drive 5gen civic,4gen civic and P5 and the exhaust on these imports dont get like crazy hot ,so my Rust-o-leum worked great
this took place a year and a half ago and still look great,
