so how come autos have that button to engage or disengage overdrive? they're automatic.Rac3rX said:There is no overdrive button on a Manual because YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY SHIFT THE GEARS, HENCE MANUAL!!!! DUH!!!!

overdrive gear on my manual that ow3ns you
try fitting that on a shift knob
no, they have an overdriven ratio. there are different ways to achieve this ratio, one of them is through an overdrive. it's a technicality that auto manufacturers and non-technical magazines don't want to explain to the average consumer because it's just easier saying "anything with a ratio of less than 1:1 is an overdrive." technically, that's not the caseRac3rX said:Any transmission gear that transmits to the drive shaft a speed greater than engine speed, is a overdrive gear, both in auto & manual!!!!!

a manual transmission could, in theory, have an overdrive. it is easier to accomplish with an overdriven gear though
really this is just arguing over terms and how they're used. it's the difference between overdrive (noun) and overdriven (adjective). just let it go
98b/w pro said:you still think that auto trannys are set up like manual ones?
does a 4 speed auto transmission with overdrive have 4 true gears?Rac3rX said:The button Ristricts the auto from shifting into 4th because Your not doing the shifting. That means your not moving the lever from gear to gear and you cant refrain from moving a lever into a next gear if there is no lever.
last i checked MSN was not a definitive source for technical automotive knowledge. they say what people can understand, which isn't totally incorrect, instead of what is technically correctRac3rX said:What does that Say 5 speed Manual Overdriven? or 5 speed Manual OVERDRIVE!!!!
what would it take for you to admit you're slightly off? just wondering if such a thing existsRac3rX said:Lets look at Websters definition
"Overdrive
1. A high gear used at high speeds to maintain the driving speed with less output power."
Hmmmm

Rac3rX...seriously, give it up. In the end, is it really that big of a deal? Like every1 said, the overdrive on an auto is a separate entity within the transmission, not an actual "gear" per se. A manual does not have anything of the sort, it just has 5 gears. Call it an "overdrive" gear if you want, whatever makes you happy and helps you sleep at night, but it's not, it's just got a really high ratio.
In summary, please stop.
