Protege 5 2003
I have one of those G-Tech accelerometer's. From using them in other cars they seem pretty accurate (within a few tenths of a second).

I did a 0-60 run (in manual mode on my automatic) it clocked 11.5 seconds.....

Even a stock Ford Escort runs faster than that? I read somewhere that the manual P5's were doing about 0-60 in 9 seconds. I can't imagine losing a whole 1.5 seconds just do to the auto?

Anyone else have some numbers on a stock P5 (either manual or AT)?

I don't have any numbers, I just remember reading C&D review.. and they p5 with manual to 60 in 9.8 and they usually get best numbers. I'm sure they dropped the hammer at good 4.5-5k rpm.

I thought it was Car and Driver who didn't launch like that?

check out http://www.car-stats.com

I would link directly to the P5 page but it's dynamically generated.

Edit: oh yeah. They report 8.8 manual transmission, taken from Motor Trend May 2002.

just listen to the protege song, it goes from 0 to 60 in about 5 minutes

Holy crap I had no idea that the P5 was so slow stock. My wifes Hyundai accent is like 11 or 12 second 0-60. The best stock 0-60 on the MSP I ever saw was around 6.8 so go figure. I think even with all of my mods I am still just in the high 5.6- 5.8 now. oh yeah add me being at 8psi to my mod list. I did a Gtec run on my last MSP 0-60 was 5.2 with tons of traction issues. I had a crap load of things on that car.

It was, as you can see in my sig it is no more. My roll on power was astronimical. That thing scared the crap out of me. I won't get into my kills but I will say that people still talk about it in town and that was 2 or 3 years ago.

No kidding, if it wasn't my car I'd be laughing too.... I like the look and styling of the P5 a lot, it's just much slower than it should be.

I doubt there is very much I could do *without dropping tons of money* to this car to make it quicker (I had considered dropping the MSP drivetrain into it, but it'd be several grand).

I'm suprised that the manual transmission make a 1.5 second difference in 0-60 (considering we have the manual mode). It must just be the weight difference of the auto tranny along with having 1 fewer gear to step through?

I had considered dropping some cash into the exhaust (headers, high flow cat) and doing some intake work (P&P, CAI etc). But considering what time I'd be using as a baseline, all this might get me down to 11 (boom03), not worth the cash.

Ok my buddy had this on his P5 and I still beat him from begining to end. He did give a decent run though. I had just intake and 1 less cat on my MSp so I was maybe running 6.4 or 6.5 0-60.
Pro5 5 spd
header no cats full exhaust, cams, CAI, underdrive pully, flywheel, clutch, motor mounts, ignition system, short throw, and suspension.

I see that you had a flux capacitor too(boom03)
Yes it is a gas saver I just go back to 1978 and get gas then come back. its great.

I used a g-tech a couple of times too on my P5 manual...I was averaging about 8.2 seconds to 60 (not enough room on that road for 1/4 times though)...this was also averaged over 6 runs (3 runs in each direction)...lowest was 7.9, and the highest was 8.5...

all of them were drop clutch holding about 3300rpm for launch (that seemed to work the best)...

with AWR manual engine mounts installed that average fell to about 8.0 because of less wheel hop...and I never used one since...both times included only a drop in K&N filter; no other mods were done to the car...32psi tire pressure on stock tires...engine was pulled to about 6800 rpm before the only upshift (only one shift for 60)...humidity was about 50% with a ambient temp of 60 degrees...(I remember all this only because I made a thread about it a while ago on another board)...

I heard they were a bit optimistic, but my friend used the same one on the same road with a Spec V and was averaging about 7.4 over a couple of runs...which is the mag average for those approximately...

Remember that magazines test them all differently...and they rarely do enough to get a real accurate result (except the better magazines)...R&T has the most accurate process for times as far as I can tell, yet they never tested an ES 2.0L or a P5 (hell not even MSPs and MP3s were ever really tested)...I despise Motor Trend, and Car and Driver can have numbers that are all over the place (fast times on some cars, slow on others)

My 11.5 run was not powerbraking or a nuetral drop it was just hitting the gas when the light turned green, maybe I could pull a second off if I was powerbraking?

Auto or Sport Auto (Techtronic whatever you call it) are slowwwwwww, but not just for the Protege, most factory autos or Sport autos are slower then the manual (Not including some serious high end transmitions, like BMW's for instance where the Auto with manual mode, the manual mode even heal toe shifts through the electronics (With no clutch) and alot more.)

I raced a Turbo Shadow (But it was a Auto) with my N/A Mildly modded Protege 2.0L LX and DISTROYED him, it was funny. I also gave a Accent a 3 second head start in the 1/8 mile and still passed him before the line (That was funny, he left I just sat there picked my teeth, then took off)

And when at the track Mazda3 2.3's with Auto/Manual mode refuse to race me (Well thats with good right, Ive eaten all the Mazda3's Ive raced so far (Got one on Vid), and pissed off a few M3 owners on the streets too.

The launch is a Big factor. With Manual you can rev to anywhere you want and Dump the clutch at the green light & Slip the clutch to get the best traction. Reving up in N and jamming her into D at green doesnt quite compare, nor does Reving it in N then tapping up on the sport shifter to have the transmition put it in D.

I even beat a modded Sport Intrepid (Auto) and missed my 2-3 shift during the race (I was too far ahead from my launch he couldnt catch up).

I dont know what my 0-60mph is, BUT I have the race against the Mazda3 2.3 Clocked at 1/8 in 10.16, not sure how fast I was going But I was in third gear, second gear tops off arround 60mph so I was definatly going faster then 60mph.

I could estimate its a high 6 to mid 7 seconds, with the curent mods I got on. In the Next few weeks headers, motor mounts, & a short shifter + bushings are going in. Im 100% certain I can do the 1/8 in under 10 seconds after that.
