no reverse lights when backing up

someone was kind enough to tell me today that my reverse lights don't illuminate when I back up. Is there a visible switch or something that I can check when it's in reverse (on the tranny or somewhere else)? The guy at the local Mazda dealer didn't seem to know his head from his ass on this one.

there will more than likely be a fuse for your reverse lights somwhere, check it. The reverse lights are triggered by the shifter going into reverse, there is usually somthing that attaches to tranny or shifter that completes the circuit when going into that gear. that could be messing up

illuminates just one or both are out, if the answer is both, that may be caused by a blown fuse.

I should have mentioned that I checked the bulbs and there is no fuse dedicated the the reverse lights; just one labeled "tail lights" and being I have brake lights, I don't think that's the issue.
