Excessive oil consumption - part 2

Yes I agree. Will get measurements after tear down and then order pistons. Would be nice if 0.050" overbite was all that I need but I'm not optimistic. What happens after 0.100" pistons are too small? New block, sleeves, custom piston and rod matching? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Excessive oil consumption - part 2

I used seafoam and it makes a ton of smoke. No idea if it cleans anything. When I took the intake and head off they were still completely covered in soot. I used a wire brush on a power drill to remove it. What I noticed when I took everything apart is the cylinders are oval, taper, and are...

Engine Knocking. Spun Rod? Probably... Help?

If you read the manual it says those pressure specs are for a warm engine. The piston thermally expands and closes the gap to the cylinder. Makes a difference but the test is still worth doing cold.

    Burnt positive battery cable

I just replaced mine. Corroded through and wouldn't clamp. Did the cable burn or the clamp? Excessive current and long starting can melt the lead in the battery (ask me how I know). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have some thru rust in that exact same area. Was thinking of welding a brace on it. Probably won't last long enough to worry about it though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Engine Knocking. Spun Rod? Probably... Help?

I've done the rebuild 3 times including a seized crank. Machinist swapped the rod caps and I didn't check when I reassembled. Was breaking it in and pushed clutch to turn around and it locked up. Machine shop did an offset grind on the rod journals and I installed oversized bearings. Then I...

Engine Knocking. Spun Rod? Probably... Help?

I disagree. You only need the starter and head installed to check this. Timing system is required but the Ecu and sensors are not. That said, a leak down test is more comprehensive. THAT said, both are supposed to be done with a warm engine so the Pistons have expanded. Sent from my iPhone...

    Camshaft Sensor

I had some similar issue when revving past 5k. I go the check engine light do cam sensor. Did some reading and wondered if the timing belt was a cause. The belt is around 30k miles and 3-4 years old so I just ordered a kit. If the cam sensor picks up the cam a certain amount late or early it...

New to ms3. And there any common problems?

Can we search for members based on location? I'm wondering if there are any ms3 owners in Charlotte that would go with me to check it out. Just checked the car fax and it was a repo from 2013 and hasn't been driven much. The dealer told me it felt a little underpowered eye he got it so took...

    Neep help with my p5

Agreed. Clean the battery terminals and connectors. That's free. Charge the battery and see if it takes a full charge. Then take that to an auto parts store like autozone. They will check the battery and alternator. Might have to remove them first but they do it for free. Sent from my iPhone...

New to ms3. And there any common problems?

I guess I'm just getting too old for this fancy nanny computer stuff. Maybe I should put a kl in the protege. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

New to ms3. And there any common problems?

It has throttle by wire? Ugh, I like a cable so I always have control. Thanks for the feedback. I'm sure going from 130 hp peak to 250ish I won't give a crap what rpm the torque is.

New to ms3. And there any common problems?

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like I shouldn't skip over the ms3 as a reliable and fun car to upgrade to from my protege.

Excessive oil consumption - part 2

That was at 114k miles. I just turned I've 118k and its burning oil again. I'm pretty sure the source of all these problems is the cylinder to piston gap. I had perfectly gapped rings from the last rebuild. However I did notice some cylinder taper and ovality that was within the factory spec...

New to ms3. And there any common problems?

Stroking the 1.8 to 2.0 reduces the rod length and increases the force on the cylinder side walls. Stroking up to 2.3 is probably even worse. Point of this is just that I think people spend way too much time blaming the turbo seals or the pcv when the engine needs to be rebuilt. A simple...

New to ms3. And there any common problems?

Ok I had some time to research. I saw two issues. One was the cam chain tensioner being loose at cold startup, likely due to lack of oil pressure to fill the tensioner. That doesn't seem like a big deal but I could be wrong. The next issue I found was oil burning from the turbo lube discharge...

New to ms3. And there any common problems?

I've been in the protege forums for years. I'm about ready to give up on the oil burning that so many owners have had problems with. I found a 2009 ms3 with around 50k miles for sale at 13k. I was wondering if there are any common issues with the car that I should be aware of before I get stuck...

Excessive oil consumption - part 2

I did the valve job this year (yeah, finally) and got the car back on the road. It's running great now. Took me long enough. It's unfortunate that the factory rings were so bad and caused so many people to burn oil. If I would have known I would have sold the car over a decade ago. Now it...

    error code P0106 ???wtf

That second pic, that's not where it connects. You need to be under the car to see the nipple underneath the main runners. I noticed that this vacuum line was disconnected. It's tough because whenever you replace the intake you need to tape it to the top so it doesn't get lost underneath. I...

    IAC\Idle your thoughts?

The screw adjusts the back stop for the throttle plate. If you turn it clockwise, it opens the throttle, effectively increasing the air that passes when you are at zero throttle. If you turn it counter-clockwise, it will allow the springs to close the throttle, but there's then a chance that...
