    100K MP5 Club

Got to to 248k on my 03 and the 3rd timing belt split yesterday. Gonna take it apart tonight. New assembly comes in tomorrow and I'll hopefully get it put back together in short order. Always seems to take longer than I set out to, and it's been a few years since I've done it. Wish me luck.

    Best CV Axle Replacement

I'm replacing the front passenger CV axle in mine and having a time as well. Disassembled it 3 times so far and I think the problem is the CV axle I got from Oreilly, this one...

Running out of ideas - NO Start issues

Magesto1, did you figure this out? I've got an 03 Protege5 with 209k miles on it. I think I've got the same problem. Not a battery issue. Everything lights up, no chugging when it does crank, but randomly it will just do nothing when I try to start it. Everything electrical will come on when I...

Replacing A/C Compressor, please double check my process

Thanks for the post. Takes some of the fear away as I've never worked with AC related stuff before. Rockauto has a kit that includes all the O-rings, drier and all that. Did you replace the o-rings in your fix? The picture of the piece makes it looks like a ton of o-rings. My compressor...

4 years/60k miles later with oil in the cylinders

Nevermind, little uneeded panic there. Prolly a better idea to get the head back on and all before I start worrying about the water pump. Did find a good video that did the timing belt replacement showing the water pump and remembered that the tensioner is one of the 6 bolts, but that short 14...

So, have the head back and boy does it look pretty. Now is the enormous suck part of the process when it's been a month since I took the thing apart and I don't remember where everything goes/which bolts go where and all that crap. For instance, just starting the reassembly and am putting on...

4 years/60k miles later with oil in the cylinders

Called yesterday and the intake valves are paper thin so they need replacing. $9 each. Hopefully this will be the last of the issues at the machine shop. They acted like they'd still have it done today so I'm anticipating having a nice shiny cylinder head sitting in my garage for about a week...

Ah, I was thinking of the 6 from 03 rather than the 626 from the year before. They're still working on it. Sposed to have it back tomorrow, we'll see. New rotors & pads installed all the way around. Hopefully the rebuild will go smoothly and I'll have a running car by end of day Tuesday.

4 years/60k miles later with oil in the cylinders

Took the head and all to the machine shop after my dad said that we don't do that kind of work and that they need to pressure test it and plane the head and everything. Dropped it off on Wednesday and they said they can't have it done till early next week. Ordered the spring that is still on...

Thanks for convincing me to go ahead and do the valves. Look what I found: Don't know how long that has been that way. Didn't seem to effect the way the car ran though, as far as I can tell. That cylinder wasn't any dirtier or damaged compared to the others.

So I thought the different seals would be obvious. HA! The only difference I can tell between the IN/EX is the IN has a smooth top around the opening and the EX has a raised ring around the opening and around the edge of the top. Openings look exactly similar. Talked to Advance Auto worker...

Stalled at Intersection.. Probably the Alternator..

Was there some kind of warning before it went dead? In my experience there are some symptoms that lead up to the bad alternator. Lights and stereo fade for a couple minutes before, AC cuts off as the car starts cutting off the non-vitals to try to keep itself running. If it was a flat out...

No luck finding the tool. Gonna see what I can do with some pvc pipe and a big c-clamp.

Autozone shows both the Felpro and the Victor Reinz valve stem seals. The Felpro are like what I have, but the VR show two different items, the intake and the exhaust. Only problem is the exhaust come in packs of 24 ($46) when I only need 8. The intake come in packs of 16 ($29) when I only need...

That may be good. I typically use 5w30 full synth.

Thanks for the links. This valve seal job is looking more and more like a job for another time. On top of having to find the right tool for the job, it looks like the Felpro gasket set is going to be a problem as they supply 16 identical seals. Due to my time constraints it looks like I'll just...

4 years/60k miles later with oil in the cylinders

Now I'm confused. I went to replace the valve seals with the spring tool I bought but the springs are seated so far down in the head that the tool won't reach them. How is this done? Is it a special spring tool I'm sposed to get? This is what I bought...

4 years/60k miles later with oil in the cylinders

Is there a good how to for replacing the valve seals? What I'm finding are all using compressed air to keep the valves up but since I've got the head off I'm not in fear of the valves falling into the cylinder. So from what I can tell I just follow the how to's I'm finding (compressed air into...

4 years/60k miles later with oil in the cylinders

It used to be heavily driven by my wife close to 20k a year, but now that I drive it only to and from work it gets maybe 10k-12k. I know I leak oil. Many moons ago I went to replace the oil pan gasket and bent the lip of the pan, causing a regular leak. I've since replaced the pan and gasket...

Right. Will be replacing the valve seals with this go-round of gaskets and what not. Didn't do that the last time. Would any of this explain the gunk in the intake manifold? Thanks for your help.
