The Canadian egr has an inlet for coolant. As for cleaning the current egr, it is usually effective. Though on one of my Protege's, (I've had 5), the egr was completely seized up. It should only take a moment after pulling it to be able to make the call if cleaning is the right path. Sent from...

Do your self a favor, don't use any sort of stop leak. This is after about an hour's worth of scrubbing with a wire brush. Idiot I bout it from said the motor was blown. Nope needed a head gasket... Best $350 I ever spent. Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk

I'm sure the car is either gone by now, or been fixed. However I just did my head gasket, valve stem seals, timing belt, water pump, and after assembly ended with the same problem. Ensure that the intake manifold gasket has been installed properly and creates a tight seal. That fixed my problem...
