Considering a 2021-2023 CX-9 CE or Better - Please Advise

I have a 2023 CX9 Carbon Edition for the wife. Need a business car (traveling salesman). I have borrowed hers for a few weeks and love it.
Thinking of picking up a used 21-23 CX9 for me. Would not even care if it was another Carbon Edition. My dealer just sent me an ad for a used 21CE but it looks like that one is only front wheel drive.
They seem to be a pretty small price difference between the low mileage, 21s and 23s, about $5000.
Can anyone advise me on the differences between the 21, 22, and 23? I’m looking for anothe CE, Grand Touring or maybe even signature.
Thank you for any guidance!

Interesting. I didn't know they made a non-AWD CE?

Only thing I can think of off the top is if you want to go for a peace of mind, I would look at 22 or 23. 21's are still caught in the oil consumption issue.

Edit: spelling

Glad to hear you like your wife's CX-9! I certainly love my 2018 haha. As @hw4ng3r mentioned, I would go for a 22+ to avoid the potential oil consumption issue, but if the price difference is significant enough I'd still consider the 2021.

I'm not sure what your climate is like, but if you find that you don't really need AWD or you're able to get a good set of winter or all-weather tires and drive to conditions, FWD could work for you. A nice bonus is that you'd get better mileage and the drivetrain is easier and cheaper to service/maintain.

I would not hesitate to consider a '21 especially if it is a low mileage CPO from an authorized Mazda dealer.

With regards to a 2021, you just need to make sure it doesn’t fall within that VIN range:

2021 CX-9 (US/Canada spec 2.5T with 10.25" center display) with VINS from JM3TC******509027 - 541070
(produced from October 6, 2020 to September 13, 2021)

2021 CX-9 (Canada/Mexico spec 2.5T with 7" or 9" center display) with VINS from JM3TC******451418 - 455173
(produced from October 6, 2020 to September 11, 2021)

There is a TSB for them with an oil consumption issue. They are the only CX-9 with the oil consumption problem.

Also if you are in Canada, know that there is a 2021 and a 2021.5 version. The 2021 has the old infotainment and the old square screen. The 2021.5 has the new infotainment with the long rectangular screen.

Certainly, FWD is worthy of consideration, in fact, preferable in many circumstances over AWD. A worthy consideration no doubt.

Thank you for this PSA! Looks like I fell outside of this range.JM3TC******** 050351

BTW - Still ecstatic with my 2021 CE. Little concerned because my mileage is sub 16k and seems most of any issues encountered are above the 30k mark and my 3 year warranty is up. Zero issues so far.
