I think most people on the road aren't out to be assholes, but their driving habits certainly make them look like it. Trying to give them a hint of any kind will usually perceive you as aggressive, and some Looney ones might even wanna come after you.

I like my car too much to risk getting hit so I don't brake check people. I just leave their hoods covered in soot. No one wants to be sitting back there breathing it all in so they usually back off

I've had this problem too, and it's got to do with amount of space between the axle and the hub teeth. Over time, they will both begin to loose material, causing a little bit of extra room.
People have suggested that a new axle nut replacement is in order, but that's just part of the problem...
The paint on the caliper would not cause overheating, since the entire braking system including the rotors, pads and the caliper are all used to cooling and heat dissipation. Combined with vents in the wheel well to help direct airflow, and you have more than just one way of dissipating heat...
