It sounds to me like the transmission torque converter was locked up and wouldn't unlock when you decelerated. You might call or stop by a reputable independent transmission shop and ask their opinion. It may answer some of your questions.

Fuel pumps don't generally fail from impeller failures. They fail from heat to the motor or just plain wear out. Impellers themselves do not necessarily cool electric motors which fail from heat. They do move liquid which cools the pump end, but not necessarily the electric motor. Electric...
